The teaser of the song sounds like they're going for the same Shirley Bassey retro throwback vibe as with Skyfall. Meh. What happened to when a Bond song could be diverse in genre and reflective of an artist's sound? Why do they want the same boring retro orchestral pop song now?

 

Because they remember what happened when they let Jack White run amok. Casino Royale's dude-rock wasn't exactly great either. Taking risks with the songs hasn't paid off in the Craig era.

 

(Very unimpressed with Sam Smith as the choice though, especially after being teased with Radiohead.)

Skyfall was the biggest hit song for the bonds in forever and obviously they want that repeat. this doesn't take off the same way they'll try something different. and I don't think it will. Sam Smith's had a couple hits but he's never felt like that huge deal in pop culture that adele felt like a couple years ago.

You Know My Name is the best Bond theme of the last 25 years.

 

Also, I disagree that Sam Smith is not huge. He's one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, artists in pop at the moment. At least from what I hear on radios, in shops, online, people talking about etc.

Would've personally gone with Florence + the Machine. They got the big overblown sound for a memorable Bond theme.

I personally would have liked if they would have gone with someone who makes absolutely no sense but Sam Smith makes good music so I'm excited to see what he has

Even though they're very successful and a very good band, I doubt they'll ever go for Florence + The Mansion, Too "indie" or the producers taste probably. Most of the really popular Bond themes have been done by musicians and bands who were considered hugely successful at the time of their respected films.
