% changes versus same day last week.

NOTE: The Wed-to-Wed drops are large because last Wednesday was a national holiday (Vernal Equinox Day). The day itself though is very good, and percentage wise (versus a typical Monday/Tuesday) is a bit stronger than a usual Wednesday.

It's going to be once again, for the third-consecutive weekend, a very close race for the #1 spot. Coco, The Boss Baby, and Doraemon have remained incredibly close to one another on a day-to-day basis since March 21st, and that's not going to change just yet. All three films are looking at increases, with the former two likely to see the biggest potential gains and be the real race for #1 since Doraemon mostly benefits over the weekdays versus weekends during Spring Break (it'll keep the admissions race close, again).

I believe Coco will edge out the victory again to claim its third-consecutive weekend at #1, but I also believe it'll come in second/third in admissions for a third-consecutive weekend as well.

>The Post appears to be the only opener to make much of an impact over the weekend, and if it gets lucky, it may manage to crack the Top 5. This film probably would have been a little bigger in the market had it performed better during award season, considering its star power.

>Red Sparrow and Valerian: City of a Thousand Planets are likely to miss the ¥100 million mark in their debuts, unless they receive a significant boost tomorrow. Neither film was expected to perform well, but missing ¥100 million on a discounted weekend with Spring Break in effect (even if it primarily boosts weekdays) is underwhelming.

>Honey isn't included in my forecast because its morning ticket sales are abysmal, but its pre-sales are solid, so it likely has some stage greetings happening later. It's not playing very wide, so unless it has an ample number of stage greetings today AND tomorrow, I don't really seeing it making the Top 10. We'll see -- accurately predicting a barely wide film with stage greetings on a discount weekend is just luck.

According to a user in WOKJ forum, Coco could finally win a weekend in admissions sold, after 3 weekends in a row being #1 box office, but selling less tickets than Doraemon and The Baby Boss.

Saturday admissions(usual locations)
1.Coco-78,408
2.TBB-77,694
3.Doraemon-65,810

Sunday:
Coco-134,401.
TBB-123,168.
Doraemon-111,195.

In that 3/4 of the market, Coco is up 16% in admissions from last week, TBB +11% and Doraemon +6%. According to Corpse the first day of the mont has a discount so i dont know if the gross will also increase.

Moana increased 2% in gross in an identical weekend last year so Coco should aim to beat that.

Note: Everything performed approx. 5-10% better in terms of admissions this weekend (e.g. a 20% decline in gross is likely a 10% decline in admissions) due to the 1st (discount day) falling on the weekend; however, that drives down the weekend average ticket prices. And as such, estimates can vary more versus actuals when this happens.

Coco continues to reign atop the box-office over the weekend, likely securing a third-consecutive week at #1 and earning its first weekend at #1 in admissions -- it had ranked second in admissions the last two weekends. Overall, Pixar's latest is doing very well, and is aiming for a total around ¥4.5 billion ($40 million+), which would be above the standard Pixar gross of ¥4 billion. Can Japan get it to $800 million worldwide?

The Boss Baby is already DreamWorks Animation's fifth or sixth (pending actuals) highest-grossing film ever, and its second weekend is bigger than any opening weekend for any DreamWorks Animation film as well. It's locked now to outgross Shrek 2 to become the studio's highest-grossing film in the market, and it's not going to be close, really. The surprise hit is aiming for a total above ¥3 billion ($30 million).

Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island remains in third place, and delivers the biggest fifth weekend in franchise history. The thirty-eighth entry in the series is now just a few hundred million away from becoming the highest-grossing film in franchise, and should finish around ¥5.5 billion ($50 million+).

The Greatest Showman, as usual, holds well once again and should have exceeded the ¥4 billion milestone after Sunday. It's going to surpass The Phantom of the Opera in the coming days to become the fourth highest-grossing live-action musical in the market, and is very likely to outgross La La Land to become the third highest-grossing live-action musical as well. Incredible success.

The Post, depending on tomorrow's actuals, might have cracked the Top 5, but either way its debut is a tad disappointing. If the film had any award buzz, I believe it could have opened above ¥200 million without much trouble. As is, it's going to be a struggle to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, and I'd bet against it doing so.

Red Sparrow performed alright given the little expectations. It might be able to reach ¥500 million ($5 million), which I'd consider decent enough since Lawrence isn't a known name in the market (The Hunger Games franchise bombed, X-Men franchise has a very niche audience, etc.).

It only needs 36M or so from Japan to pass 800, right? Seem quite likely. That would give 2017 11 movies at 800+, clobbering the previous record (2016, with 8).

Funny that just 3 years earlier GotG made worldwide top 3 with 773, and in 2017 that would only get you 13th O.O

Well, yeah. Picked it precisely to make a stark comparison, weakest in recent history. Still crazy to me that the same amount of money can be 3rd vs 13th so close to each other.

After this weekend, it needs some 20M from Japan to reach the 800M.

I thought it needed about $45M from Japan. It's at $780M atm and in most other markets, Coco wrapped up its run.

The 780 is with an outdated japan figure though, right? BOM currently shows 780 with 15.9 from Japan, so the actual figure after this weekend should be 790 and only 10 more needed.

Nope.

Before Japan release, Coco was at 755M ww, so 45M needed from Japan for 800M.

Till last sunday, Coco had grossed 25M, so total stands at 780M. So it still needs 20 more from Japan (from actuals 25M to final 45M) to make the 800M.

And projections put Coco on the 40M range in Japan, so it seems to be a tight end wether above or under 800M final ww.  I hope it's above!!

Go Coco!!

$780 million is the latest up-to-date gross. Don't mind BOM's foreign updates. They usually lag in updating totals per country but their grand worldwide total is always updated with the latest correct figures.

If you are unsure about box officemojo for international figure, you can look at the latest comscore:

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/comscore-announces-official-worldwide-box-office-results-for-weekend-of-april-1-2018-300622447.html

Coco was estimated to be around 780,298,871 after Sunday.

Like said above Mojo update by market can take weeks and/or never happen for a lot of markets specific, but they usually have the total updated correctly.

Ahh, I see. Rather annoying that BOM market specific numbers and total international figure are totally desynced like that, but I guess I can see how it would be a bother for them to keep everything updated and in correspondence.
