However, because star power is often simplified as "one name should be credited for all success" I'm just pointing out that isn't really the case. Lucy didn't open just because SJ was in it, but because she was put in a mass-appealing material (action scenes, high concept) which was not the case with movies such as Hail Caesar, Under the Skin (this wasn't even an arthouse hit cause it couldn't earn back its budget from limited release, which many indies can), We Bought the Zoo, Jon John, and other movies she also made while playing BW. And yet the star power didn't rub off on them because the material didn't hold the crossover appeal of Lucy. I am way behind actual films ( I watch a lot per buying used discs), was there any other film with her in such an absolute leacd character) Lucy had that too, I think it isn't that often to see a film with such difference in one lead and some supporting characters = not meant to further the discussion, more like I really would like to know. in general: I think it depends also on the appeal of the basic story of the film, if that is specialised, I wouldn't watch a film with one or 2 of my favourite actors, if the summary of the films does not appeal to me. But if I learn an actor I like (male/female) I do take the effort to look it up, if I am in the 'I have a bit time, lets buy some new films for future days I'll have again time. That is another rhing, that might play into it: HV numbers, the most films nowadays do not have to be watched in a cinema (with loud co-audience...), but e.g. Lucy I though was one to watch in a cinema. Might be interesting to look those numbers up too. Too bad digital downloads... do not have outlets to check on numbers yet (as far as I kno, I might not be up-to-date)

If we go by how R rated action movies with a female lead (haywire, Columbiana) did in comparison. But than, it's a bit of apples and oranges too because Lucy had a wacky sci fi element while the other 2 were generic revenge flicks. I still think that SJ name propped its boxoffice from, lets say, Underworld numbers to bone fide blockbuster. That's how the system really works but stars take credit for something that's really mostly concept's doing. Think about the difference between "Ryan Reynolds in anything but Deadpool" boxoffice and "Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool" boxoffice. Labed impressed by being his favorite part of the film though
Alli
http://www.thewrap.com/sing-stealthily-ready-to-top-passengers-assassins-creed-at-christmas-box-office/ That same tracker has the Michael Fassbender-starring action fantasy flick “Assassin’s Creed” debuting at just $20 million during the three days and $33 million over the five days. NOT bad IMO

It's intentionally edited that way to fit a short clip. You can tell through recently released promo of that case 1:08 we see a longer violent altercation with a Spanish guard

They'll definitely want to make the combat sequences a highlight.
DeeCee
I don't understand this. Do they go into the past and interact with the past? Is it set in the present?

antovolk
Studios altering clips from films to the point of them being less clips and more just promos is pissing me off. So we can excuse the editing on this one. Edited December 2, 2016 by antovolk

Thanks. The trailer I've seen is confusing on that point. I've never played the games. I had the trailer again tonight. It gives you no impression that anything actually happens in the present. Very poor marketing. Edited December 2, 2016 by DeeCee
shayhiri
And this is also one of the most repulsively dumb and absurd concepts ever. In the games it kinda worked, because the actual game was all set in the past. But in the movies - they made a crucial mistake. And I'll be glad if this movie burns just for that - which it will anyway. HOWEVER if this same story was all set in the past, thus being a period piece (like the glorious Prince of Persia), the Shay would have led a Holy Crusade and brought a Holy War on your assess - just to defend this same movie. So you don't know what you've missed here... Edited December 2, 2016 by shayhiri

MattW
If it can hit $30m in 5 days I don't see why it misses $100m domestic. Still needs a lot overseas to be a success, but 100 domestic isn't anything to dismiss.
