Because Han Solo will do far far far worse than TLJ

 

If it is a fun sci-fi comedy, can't they just market it as "From the studio behind Guardians of the Galaxy"?

 

Or is the name Star Wars already toxic in China?

Yeah it would be smart to not have Star Wars in the title for Solo.

At this point Disney might just need to dump any future plan of getting a China release for Han Solo.

For them releasing a movie in China is "free", that's why studios only get back about 25% of China box office. 

 

So there's absolutely no harm on releasing a movie there, unless you make a huge display marketing campaign on your own (besides the China's govmnt. free campaign they make included in the 75-25% deal made with studios) as TFA made, displaying Stormtrooper on the Great Wall and big things like that.

They can give the chance to another movie, which I doubt any other movie would make less than Solo.

Don't try to trick China into watching a Star Wars movie by making Solo not look like one, you'll only make them mad.

It will be a 2019 release. By then the quota and fee percentage is probably larger. Anyway, it seems unlikely that it would steal a slot from another Disney film. All of Disney's wide-release films were released in China in 2017.

Just right now I did a google search for Jumanji Imax and I came upon a press release saying that it will be released in IMAX theaters also in China.
