Valkyrie was also a Christmas release and that did 21M. And he played a nazi in that one. JR was an action movie based on a hugely successful series of books. It sold over 100M worldwide.  Face it, 15M was a piss poor opening.

Why would JR2 increase?

Anyway, the reviews will also be important.  The first one wasn't well liked. The sequel seems unnecessary to me.

Wasnt well liked? Maybe during release but as days passed by many watched it and liked it be it critics or audience thru dvd streaming etcc....

FYI JR RT score increased by 2% to 62% now

Exactly. I'm one of these guys who discovered it later. After the decent but not overwhelming reviews I thought it could be mediocre and not worth seeing it in cinema and (IMO) I was wrong.

A 15M opening would have been poor during the year but not as a Christmas release. And I can be wrong but wasn't there also a real world bad rampage to that time?

I love Cruise more than anyone and the first Jack Reacher is awesome. However, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think this is gonna do well.

worst case scenario it makes 150m. More than M7 on a smaller budget. I think it's going to surprise people.

I feel like Paramount is giving this a pretty big push. Definitely pushing it as more of an action film than the first. Maybe that might help in its favor.

I really have no clue why Paramount is pushing this one so hard... it must not be because of their 2015 and 2016 performances because they are swimming in successful franchises and are having a great year at the box office and early 2017 looks even better with Monster Trucks and Rings! :P

Louisiana has a 30% tax credit for film. 96 is what the budget is before credit.

The first movie was such a pleasant surprise for me but my expectations on this one are pretty low

Without his Royal Jainess in what seems to be his only good decent sized on screen role, how can this compare?

I feel the same. The first movie was cushioned by the holidays, on its way to a 5x multiplier. Jack Reacher 2 won't have the same luxury.
