Yup. The test screenings back in early 2015 were off the freaking charts and Universal went into overdrive commissioning Illumination to put the sequel into early development and Universal Creative to fast-track development of a family dark ride for the parks. They gambled and essentially hit the jackpot.

 

 

I'm thinking they go the Cars 2/Muppets Most Wanted route and go international. The title? "The Secret World of Pets". (this is speculation, btw)

Yes, but to be fair to Illumination the sequel has been in the works since 2015, which would give it the usual 3-year production cycle of most. Still, it's pretty insane that they were developing the sequel nearly a year before the first film even came out!

I think it would have lead to a much worse sequel and clearly Illumination knew they couldn't meet that deadline. I'm surprised they had nothing to replace it, it'll be the first summer in 4 years without an Illumination film.

Wonder why Illumination are moving from their traditional July slot? I guess they are worried about The Lion King but it'll have its legs cut down by TS4 two weeks later. I won't be surprised if this makes less than the first film
