The Interview | Limited Release on December 25, 2014

Recommended Posts

Had this been released in theaters after the whole charade, like in larger chains and all that, it would've topped Christmas Day. 15M online sales and 1M in theaters? Not to mention that most people decided to download it off torrents.

Also, let's not forget with these online rentals entire families can watch and the price was $6. So $6 for a family of 4 vs. $40 for a family of 4 assuming $10/ticket at a theater. So, yah $15M is huge and this was not available on iTunes or Amazon. Had this not been released online this would have made a shit ton of money. Also, let's not forget all those who downloaded it off Torrent sites. Some of them likely would have paid to see it in the theater. To make a long story short, Sony threw out a lot of money just to get this movie out of their way.

You can bet AMC and co are kicking themselves. Then again, it would have been detrimental to the movies that did open.

Unbroken - would that have made as much as it did with The Interview out?

Would people have been deterred from going to theaters had it opened wide, because of the threat?

We'll never know.

When you think $25m could've been the total without pirating, just insane how big of a problem torrents continue to play in the media biz. Even with the current technological limitations, eventually with enough $ spent, lawyers they should be able to crackdown harder on it.

The problem imo is that pirating media via the Internet has become so widespread for such a long time now that there is a generation of kids/young people that have grown up without having to pay for music or movies and who almost expect to get it for free. Changing that attitude and helping them to see the value in supporting the media they enjoy is one of the most important challenges Hollywood has to overcome.

15m is huge.

Thats 15m at 6 bucks, and that 6 bucks covers the 2,3,4 or even 8 people sitting around watching.

By huge, you mean...far less than they would've made with a theatrical release (where they would've made a good percentage of the VOD anyway as second run?).

Agreed. I detect sarcasm in this post...so yeah.

If we assume $10 ticket with 4 people seeing this. I know my family wanted to see it and this seems a film people would see in big groups. Anyway, that would be $40 for every $6 download. That would have equated to a $100M OW. Even assuming that only half the people would see it who paid for VOD, that is still a $50M 4-Day OW. And, lots not forget those who torrented it. Some may have seen it in the theaters. So, yah, this would have made a shit ton, and Sony knows it.

Man buys $650 worth of tickets for the OD at the local theater to try and sell them for profit. Plan backfires as movie was screened online too.

It's his fault. I do know Regal allows full refunds if it is before the film starts. But, this is an Indie theater.

What a dumbass. Even if the movie wasn't being screened online, you're not going to make much of a profit from scalping movie tickets. Unlike sporting events, there are multiple showtimes for the same exact viewing experience. If one show is sold out, people are just going to go to another one.

You know?? I've wondered this for awhile since this whole hacking thing started, but it makes me wonder if there was no hacking to begin with and this was nothing more than Bizarre marketing. a ruse to sell this movie and that North Korea was in on it the whole time??? I feel this way because it just seems like a stupid movie for North Korea to get this worked up over, not to mention the fact that back in 2005 or whenever it was, TEAM AMERICA basically had the same plot, wasn't it?? Or close to it?? And if that's true, then how come North Korea didn't get worked up over it back then like they are now???

Someone evidently hasn't watched either movie.
