2014 Academy Awards: The Official Thread (ALL NOMINEES IN THE FIRST POST)

Recommended Posts

I thought so much love for American Hustle back in December/ early January was over the top but the backlash against it is even worse. It shouldn't be getting so much hate.

Not with the GA though.

But if O Russel wins best director at the Oscars that the final nail in 'me giving a fuck about Oscars' coffin.

I'm starting with my BP marathon. In this month, until the Oscars night I'll try to see every BP contender that has opened in my country. DBC do not open in Spain until mid March.

Last night I saw Captain Phillips. Great experience! So glad it's in the race. I'm so embarrassed with Hanks snub. Abdi did also an incredible performance, I would love to see him taking a surprising gold. Once I see Nebraska (it opens here in two weeks), I will tell if Greengrass snub is painful.

Today, I'm going to see 12YAS for the first time.

Next week: WOWS (first time) & Gravity (second time)

I haven't even seen Captain Phillip and the Greengrass snub is painful :P

Yep. This is why Oscars are a joke for the most part. I used to think that only about 20 or so movies have any realistic chance at competing for Oscars but this number is far worse. I am not sure if going back to 5 BP contenders will change things that much.

Its deserved, at least when it comes to the awards attention its getting.  That film is a perfect example of a movie that thinks its way better and smarter than it actually is.  Nobody would give a shit about it if it didn't have all those big stars(some of which are even hilariously miscast) in it overacting because its weak on everything else.

^At the very least I think it's a shoo-in to win Adapted screenplay too. I think lupita's gonna win as well.

Oh yeah, forgot about her!

I wouldn't be surprised if they give a token award to Wolf via Adapted Screenplay, even though the script was probably the weakest part of the production.

Already seen 12 years a slave. Pretty solid and necessary film but not a masterpiece, IMHO

Some scenes could be better edited or where kind of filled. ONTOH, some secondary roles are underused, and others leave a profound mark way after they leave the screen without almost any explanation.

Though I think this year's drop can be attributed to the lack of decent actressing. Generally speaking, Actress has quite a few non-BP nominees.

3 way race for BP, between Argo, Pi and Lincoln...ooops I mean American Hustle, Gravity and 12 Years.

(2000 was a 3 way race as well)

The moment Affleck was snubbed for BD, it became a one-way race.

This is quite interesting. The PGA tie really throws a wrench into everything. Had 12YAS or Gravity won the PGA, AH's chances would be looking slim, but the tie pretty much puts all three films on equal footing. I still give 12YAS a slight edge.

When you have nothing to do on a Sunday night:

The Wreck of the "Oscar For Reford"

(to the tune of Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald)

The legend lives on, from the heart of Tinsel Town

in the heat of the academy's season,

The show, it is said, is where all the stars go,

when they pander to taste for good reason,

With a powerful role, full of wonderful soul,

it was said that Redford would win gold,

But on morning 16, a shot pierced through the dream,

in a tale that has left my heart cold.

Robert Redford was a man, who had the power to stand,

as a jack of nearly any trade.

He was a master of the act, in the front and the back,

just look at all the films that he made.

Then "All Is Lost" hit, and we said, "Holy shit!"

This man was a lock for the win.

To the theaters, it came, but received little gain,

yet he was still sure to get in.

Spaghetti joined the hype on a Saturday night,

leaving his art house theater blown away,

He told all his friends, without revealing the end,

of this new cinematic foray.

Then Sam came long, and acab joined the song,

Even though more theaters didn't come through,

Then Baumer gave bank, giving it a high rank,

Goph, Jake, Tele Tauriel, too.

The love was so great, almost no one could hate,

on this quietly masterful tale.

Yet one can't help but fear, as Oscar season grew near,

that the film might just possibly fail.

The hype was so high, cause he made people cry,

the S.S. Oscar for Redford was sailing,

But trouble soon would creep, in an upcoming week,

which would leave every one of us flailing.

The SAG made the call, sending shock across the hall,

that Redford's name received no mention,

Silently I hoped, that I had just been too doped,

and when sober I'd see the correction.

Hope quickly returned, when nominations he earned,

for the Critic's Choice and Golden Globe prize,

We silently prayed, but soon became amazed,

by a rival film that called forth our eyes,

Marty's latest pic, showing Leo as a dick,

had us calling "Give him the award."

The buzz he entailed, also with Christian Bale,

was like a piercing strike with a sword.

The 16th soon came, "Best Actor" said by name,

the answer revealed in a few.

First the actor from Hustle, Dern then did the bustle,

with a deep fearful breath from the crew .

Leo scored a spot, though he earned what he got,

it seemed that all would really be lost.

In a minimal shock, Matt and Chiwey the locks,

took the spaces with Redford as cost.

The ship, she soon fell, straight into hell,

though the nominees were rather straigtforward,

But I cannot help, but to let out a yelp,

for the S.S. Oscar for Redford.

salt on my wounds again  :(

I think Cuaron wins the DGA, but then I think Gravity wins BP and McQueen wins BD. Sort of like what happened in 2000.

I'm not sold on a split. Those are rare and we just had a once in a blue moon split situation last year.
