Weekend ASM2 thread: 92M

Recommended Posts

That's a brilliant number!

If everything goes well it's weekend gross is poised to beat The Avengers opening.....................................day.

I can't imagine what the third part is going to do...will it do the unthinkable and beat the Hancock's gross of $227 mill?Stay tuned, this franchise has been on a roll:

Looks to me like this is probably headed towards an OW of 80 million.  That is pretty terrible when you consider that it is not going to have the legs of Captain 2, considering Captain 2 has a 93% Flixster score and 90% RT score from critics.  I hope the same kind of OW crash happens to Transformers 4 - so studios get the message that they are going way, way overboard with the number of sequels and reboots.

I will say that you can say what you want about Webb's version but you have to at least admit the origins of all of the enhanced people coming from Oscorp is a hell of a lot better than a random meteor.  ;)

Not really. Over the course of a year a number or recorded strikes are recorded by meteorites on the Earth. Most are small enough to burn up so the idea that this beat the statistical odds, perhaps due to it's alien stowaway, makes it plausible enough. The flaw of the scene is just how little of an impact is made from a sound perspective and kicking up some debris spray.

Funny how SM has plummeted so far from where it used to be. It was once absolutely untouchable, THE superhero movie, a massive movie event. Now it's just like any average summer blockbuster, but Hollywood doesn't seem to care, or listen.

Yeah, it's strange to see franchise fatigue unfold before our eyes. Also sucks cuz it means we're all getting older. I do think Spidey can bounce back eventually. If Batman could do it, then so can Spidey.

Range of $80-105m possible this weekend. Hmm...

If we look at the last 2 Marvel May openers the midnight to weekend multiplier was pretty much the same.

TA : 207.44/18.7 = 11.09

IM3 : 174.14/15.6 = 11.16

Would give TASM2 96.5 - 97m.

TASM2 has a relative lack of buzz, but 90m+ is very likely.

Partly why I'm less forgiving in my criticism of TASM2. The way Sony's handling this franchise irritates the hell out of me. And, has since they first tampered with Raimi's formula and thrust Venom on him. They're bleeding it. Straight medieval bloodletting. The goodwill's draining from movie to movie. BUT, an ambitious, young talent like Goddard just may save the day. Sinister Six may well be a damn fun blockbuster. Come on, Sony, let Goddard put his stamp on the damn thing.

The biggest issue of this reboot is that they tried to have the cake and eat it too...and they didn't even had the flour.

They wanted it to be close enough to the previous franchise so they don't alienate the huge build-in audience and they tried it to make it hip.Neither of those things worked. It's lacking in almost every department compared to the first two films and the films bring nothing new to the table in an age of Marvel's heroes and Nolan's Batman.

Every reboot that has succeeded has been a big transformation from it's predecessors.Let's take the example you took,Batman,it has 7 major films and the distinction between Burton/Schumacher/Nolan is HUGE.A lot of people weren't fans of the previous Batman reincarnations but fell in love with Nolan's vision.

This reboot offers nothing we haven't seen and better,10 years ago.

You can also take the wonderful Casino Royale as an example,it erased from our memories anything Pierce Brosnan related, with one trailer.

Not really.Marvel's films are huge successes and are nothing alike Nolan's Batman.

Batman Begins came out in 2005 and Spider-Man 3 opened in 2007 with by far the biggest opening weekend until then.Sony(and Raimi to certain point) wounded the franchise with awful third film and this franchise has made Spider-Man completely irrelevant.

Nope, Raimi built a franchise that and Sony destroyed it. Spidey is in ruins now. If they were to do SM4 with Garfield, TASM would have easily cleared 300m. They decided to remake SM1, the result was meh and the box office was disappointing. Ok for some films, but for a Spidey film the tall was underwhelming. They could have still bounce back and come up with a refreshing film and a different director using the potential in Garfield and Stone, but no, they had to go down the SM3 route and now TASM will be lucky to hit 230m and end up losing to CA and X-Men. TASM3 will be begging for 200m...
