Thursday Numbers (Spatula) | The Fault in our Stars - 3.7M | Maleficent - 3.59M

Recommended Posts

But at the same time this summer will likely provide RECORD number of 200+ movies. ASM2, Zilla, X, Malef, Bayformers 4, Dragon 2 are all almost locked now. 1 more and it's a record

22 Jump Street, Apes, and even Guardians of the Galaxy have a great shot. The record will most likely be broken.

For Mal to for sure hit 200 we need to see how big the drop off is this week and Transformers week.

WWZ crossed 200M, and it opened even lower than Mal. Currently Maleficent has been holding up better than WWZ, 200M+ is 90% locked.

CAP 2 opened a month away from summer.

If nothing else outgrosses it this summer, who wants to bet studios start "officially" referring to April as summer?

(Like they should have started doing, kinda, in 2011.)

Why not March too? Let's say the summer season goes from March to October.

Malef is 144.3m with thu estimates.

That's 50.5m for the week (34.3 + 16.2)

Will easily get 55-56m more to touch 200m. Should go >210m.

I guess being the first out of the gate really DOES matter, even if that meant opening a month before May. TWS scheduling looks like such a genius move after such a weak May. ;)

The problem with April though is it can't sustain multiple huge blockbusters, and it can only do so when Easter falls in April too.  Both March and April are strong months, however neither have proven to be able to sustain as many blockbusters as a summer month can.

spidey is effectively at #10 for the year right now behind

lego, ca2, dofp, malef, httyd2, tf4, bh6, mj1, hobbit3

with gotg, interstellar, 22js and apes being other possibilities, and of course possible surprise hits.

The crazy thing is a "blockbuster" movie that opened at the beginning of the "summer" will be making peanuts by the start of the actual summer season.
