Rise of the Guardians opened to 23m, Puss 34m, Megamind 46m, HTTYD 43m, KFP2 47m and Shrek4 70m. Madagascar3 did just decent and it decreased from the second one. Let's face, Dreamworks never was huge (outside Shrek franchise), it's not Fox's fault.

 

Dreamworks is inconsistent and while that might have been okay when CG films were fairly new but now with competition from almost every studio and Disney finding its mojo again after Frozen, DWA needs to step up their game rather than just rely on sequels and spin-offs.

Disney would have made HTTYD2 a musical...with everyone including dragons breaking into a song - fiery songs for big dragons, cute songs for tiny ones. And added a prince/princess angle. Telling you...blockbuster.

None of their last 4 movies were sequels or spinoffs. They just didn't work that well, other than maybe The Croods which was saved by WW.

Dreamworks is also inconsistent in quality, sometimes they make excellent animations in both the CGI and the quality, other times it's complete mediocrity.  

 

It's sad HTTYD2 has to suffer, it was a great movie.

Let's just hope irony prevails, and the movie shows legs that the dragons don't have.That being said...no, I'm not in on the HTTYD2 multiplier greater than the first movie club.
