Critics consensus:  With unimpressive effects and plot points seemingly pieced together from previous dystopian YA sci-fi films, The 5th Wave ends up feeling like more of a limp, derivative wriggle.

I only watched this as a time filler before seeing the excellent The Big Short (as an aside kids.  GO SEE THE BIG SHORT INSTEAD).  I had very low expectations and those expectations were never exceeded.  The opening scene did suggest it might be something more but it was not to be.
