vc2002
What are the films of this year people thought had a chance of 300m? How to Train Your Dragon 2? Captain 2? X-men DOFP?
TServo2049
Dragon 2 boggles my mind in retrospect. Why DID everyone (including me) think it could pass $300M? I am asking this in all seriousness. Edited August 30, 2014 by TServo2049

John Marston
Dragon 2 boggles my mind in retrospect. Why DID everyone (including me) think it could pass $300M? I am asking this in all seriousness. good will from the first one and lack of competition from PIxar. Despicable Me 2's performance last year definitely added fuel to the predictions. TServo2049
Something I just realized: Dragon 1 may not have even crossed $200M if two-thirds of its sales hadn't been 3D. So getting to $300M in 2014 really would have required a Despicable Me 2-level admissions breakout. Edited August 30, 2014 by TServo2049

So getting to $300M in 2014 really would have required a Despicable Me 2-level admissions breakout. After DM2/Frozen/Lego overperformances, I don't think it was outlandish for most people to expect that from HTTYD2.
