Southpaw would have been better suited to a month like October or September. Instead Weinstein is basically dumping it, by releasing it during the summer.

 

His schedule for late in the year is usually reserved for movies he thinks are award worthy.  Southpaw isn't. This is probably the best spot for it.  If they wanted to dump it they'd hand it off to Radius but they've allocated a lot of money for advertising and are opening it wide.

I think Jake is becoming something of a minor draw after his recent string of quality performances and film choices (and even the consensus on this movie is that he's terrific again, it's the rest of the movie that leaves something to be desired).

Weirdly enough, Tomorrowland and Genisys may actually make it into the top 15 at the end of the summer despite underperforming horribly.

There is no way a movie with zero rush factor will only do 5m after 1.2m in previews. That's a terrible IM. It's heading for a 20m+ weekend.
