Apparently the American Flag on the moon is in the movie it’s just they don’t go through the detailed process of him taking it out and putting it on since it was something that was very meticulously organized by NASA and they didn’t see a point

imagine if Trump tweets though lol 😂

Yeah, the flag is there they just didn't have a shot of him planting it. Partly because it'd take away from the main emotional arc beat in that sequence. (For the record I didn't notice the flag at all when I saw it).

There's already plenty of space race contextualising in other places.

Thought putting the flag down would be an iconic scene, maybe even more so than the first step on the moon of lift off? I bit weird to off-screen it.,

Again, would have taken away from the big emotional beat of that whole scene. Political stuff aside (that I agree with - great move IMO and it does sound like what Armstrong himself would have preferred too) there is a storytelling reason.... Spoilers obviously but for those curious

a big throughline with Neil is losing his daughter to cancer - that's essentially what the film opens with, and it's what leads him to sign up for Gemini in the first place.  He brings her bracelet (which we first see him putting in his desk as a memento of her early on) to the Moon with him and drops that in a crater.

We’ve read a number of comments about the film today and specifically about the absence of the flag planting scene, made largely by people who haven’t seen the movie. As we’ve seen it multiple times, we thought maybe we should weigh in. This is a film that focuses on what you don’t know about Neil Armstrong. It’s a film that focuses on things you didn’t see or may not remember about Neil’s journey to the moon. The filmmakers spent years doing extensive research to get at the man behind the myth, to get at the story behind the story. It’s a movie that gives you unique insight into the Armstrong family and fallen American Heroes like Elliot See and Ed White. It’s a very personal movie about our dad’s journey, seen through his eyes. This story is human and it is universal. Of course, it celebrates an America achievement. It also celebrates an achievement “for all mankind,” as it says on the plaque Neil and Buzz left on the moon. It is a story about an ordinary man who makes profound sacrifices and suffers through intense loss in order to achieve the impossible. Although Neil didn’t see himself that way, he was an American hero. He was also an engineer and a pilot, a father and a friend, a man who suffered privately through great tragedies with incredible grace. This is why, though there are numerous shots of the American flag on the moon, the filmmakers chose to focus on Neil looking back at the earth, his walk to Little West Crater, his unique, personal experience of completing this journey, a journey that has seen so many incredible highs and devastating lows. In short, we do not feel this movie is anti-American in the slightest. Quite the opposite. But don’t take our word for it. We’d encourage everyone to go see this remarkable film and see for themselves.

“In ‘First Man’ I show the American flag standing on the lunar surface, but the flag being physically planted into the surface is one of several moments of the Apollo 11 lunar EVA that I chose not to focus upon,” he said in a statement. “To address the question of whether this was a political statement, the answer is no. My goal with this movie was to share with audiences the unseen, unknown aspects of America’s mission to the moon — particularly Neil Armstrong’s personal saga and what he may have been thinking and feeling during those famous few hours.”

“I wanted the primary focus in that scene to be on Neil’s solitary moments on the moon — his point of view as he first exited the LEM, his time spent at Little West Crater, the memories that may have crossed his mind during his lunar EVA,” Chazelle added. “This was a feat beyond imagination; it was truly a giant leap for mankind. This film is about one of the most extraordinary accomplishments not only in American history, but in human history. My hope is that by digging under the surface and humanizing the icon, we can better understand just how difficult, audacious and heroic this moment really was.”

First Man cutting out the flag is absolutely stupid and just more evidence of Hollywood stupidly pandering to overseas. They won't give a shit about this. China won't get it since it isn't filled with Fast cars, explosions or big robots. They can't really process anything more complex than that. And Americans are going to boycott this. womp womp.

Some seriously crazy shit being written about this on twitter by the conservative MAGA crowd right now. The nutters are calling for Gosling's deportation and calling him an idiot, loser, weirdo, hack, Hollywood elite, traitor and even a pedophile.

No one is going to boycott it except right-wing snowflakes who would not have seen it to begin with.

They have and show the flag, they apparently just don’t show the actual planting of it

The ring wing folks have already started with their attack on this film’s ratings.

Youd think with all the jobs they have (that was their excuse for low inauguration number) they’d have actually job related things to do and not down voting a movie on IMDb or complaining that a Canadian Born actor is a traitor but alas here we are

I'm seeing this in theaters anyway, as it has the director of two of my favorite films of the 2010s so far, as well as one of my favorite actors - Ryan Gosling. Hardcore right wingers need to learn to chill just as much as hardcore left wingers do.; a character study of an American is pretty American in and of itself if you ask me.

Why am I not surprised. Hope there’s a boycott that depresses the boxoffice performance. Reminds me of the Man of Steel omission (truth, justice and...). A film showing one of the greatest feats of mankind and a stand-in for American exceptionalism. This is the kind of film that is red meat for us right wingers. ‘Oh they wouldn’t have seen this movie anyway’ is silly.
