Oscars Discussion - Nominations in First Post - Red Carpet Time!

Recommended Posts

This is more about politics, nepotism, friendship and a fondness of what it was like to be in the 1920's, you know that roaring time when the stock market crashed and killed millions of people.

To be fair, the Crash was at the end of 1929, so for most of the 20's they were roaring.

The Academy consists of a bunch of pretentious 70 year old virgins who are so frustrated with their own cynicism and hypercritical sensitivity to garbage disguised in poetic symbolism that they act "cool" and "cultured" by selecting a handfull of pictures that only true movie fans have even heard of and say they're the best pictures of the year, and then they wonder why no one gives a fuck about the awards anymore. Made if they weren't so pretentious they'd actually accomplish something interesting.

Am I the only one who feels that Hugo and The Artist were both really good films deserving of their noms?

Hugo is one of my favorites of the year (I'd love to see it win), but I also think Artist is worthy of a nod...I just don't think its worthy of winning, necessarily.

I'm all for the oscars being more populist (or at least having the guts to award daring, good indie films) but HB is unmitigated garbage and CSL is painfully derivative. Blame the Academy for many things, but not for ignoring those two.

My opinion differs from yours. And since it's mine, I felt I should put out there. HB and CSL are twice the movie that The ARtist and especially ELIC could ever hope to be. Sorry if they actually made me laugh and make me feel something for the characters.

I agree with all of this except with the virgin part. These are the same people who run Hollywood. So you know at least 90% of them have banged an actress or actor so they could get a part. Casting Couch porno films are there for a reason.

I don't mind Hugo. I'm just saying that there are other films that could have been there with the nine noms.

I am not rooting for any movie to win, but yes I think Hugo is the best movie I saw last year so I agree it is deserving of the nomination.

I hope with all my heart that ratings are abysmal this year.

Oh, they will be. What BP nom have a lot of people seen? The Help? Maybe Moneyball? All the more incentive to nominate TDKR and Hobbit next year, providing they're up to snuff in quality.

Guess I'll post my good/bads

Good

Descendants gets BP and screenplay nods

Man or Muppet nominated for song

Real in Rio nominated (an unlikely choice, but one I agree with)

Cars 2 absent (at least AMPAS maintains a tiny bit of credibility in the animation field)

Bad

50/50 and The Muppets snubbed for BP

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is anywhere near the Oscar noms

The Help (sorry, but it's just slightly above Blind Side status for me)

Shailene Woodley snubbed for Best Supporting Actress (Deserved it FAR more than Melissa McCarthy)

Winnie the Pooh and Arthur Christmas snubbed for KFP2 (probably deserved over Puss in Boots too, but I liked that movie, so I'm not complaining)

Go MiP! I hope it wins Best Ensamble SAG and upsets the Artist. Also, more than any other eyar, this one proves nominations are rigged to the core.Gopher, TDKR won`t get any nominations say maybe in supporting actor/actress category if any newcomer proves as iconic as Ledger (and his death helped the nom although BSA is the category that favors villains of any kind). TH is likely to get in on LOTR coattails, though. Plus AMPAS hate Nolan and love Jackson. Fact.

If TDKR is pretty good, it will get a nom. It won't get ignored next year.Anyway, I disagree with Sasha. This experiment of 5-10 nominees hasn't failed. This wasn't going to be an amazing year for nominees no matter how you cut it. There weren't any blockbuster level films or very many mainstream movies for that matter worthy of nom. Last year, Inception and TS3 deserved their noms. This year, nothing really stands out as being worthy. Next year will be different.

I wholeheartedly disagree. This was one of the few years where blockbusters were far stronger overall than the typical Academy baiting smaller films. Blockbusters like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Potter, and First Class were easily superior films to the likes of "Loud"(obvious reasons), "Midnight"(nice little rom-com, but BP material? No.), "Tree of Life"(apparently BP's don't need to make any logical sense), or "War Horse" (oh so been there, done that Spielberg).

I can name 50 films of 2011 that were better than EL. Daldry makes the most boring films ever, I don't know why is he so loved. The only decent film he made was The Hours. It's the most boring year ever. Worse than the Slumdog sweep, because at least you could hate that film and we had the TDK snub. The Artist is good, a worthy winner, but something should challenge it, because it's not great. Would be awesome if somehow Hugo could pull an upset. The only interesting race is best actress.
