THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS | 507.1 M overseas | 875.5 M worldwide

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping this will be an inspiration for both Illuminations and Dreamworks.  Build a solid brand and release quality original films that the GA wants to see.  They don't have to go the route of Ice Age 10 and DM9.  Dreamworks originals have failed of late but I actually loved Peabody.  Wish that would have been more successful at the box office.

The Secret Life Of Pets has crossed $400m at the international box office and $750m globally today [Sept 4].

Overseas, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ animation added an estimated $17.3m from its 55 territories for $403m. It opened in Singapore with a chart-topping $1.3m and retained the top spot in Russia with $3.1m for $30.2m after three weeks in play.

It has six more territories to release, starting with Australia and Malaysia next weekend.

The Secret Life of Pets (2)
Universal Pictures

Crossing $400M international and $750M worldwide, Illumination/Universal’s Petsgot a $17.3M tummy rub this weekend in 55 territories. The offshore cume is $403M; globally it’s at $762.7M. Singapore was new in the frame at No. 1 with $1.3M across 30 dates. The opening is No. 2 among animated films this year, just behind Dory.

In Russia, Pets lovers gave the film a third consecutive weekend at No. 1 with $3.1M and a total $30.2M. Today, it passes Minions to become the No. 3 highest grossing movie ever in the market — behind Avatar and Zootopia. Japan has now cumed $36M and Brazil has tallied $9.3M, holding the top slot for the 2nd week in a row.

The $800M worldwide milestone is next with Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa and Italy still to come.

With 452.724 admissions Pets is now the highest attended movie of the year in Portugal! (Beating Dory's 420k) I think it could hit 600k there - which is is still far away from Minions (936.513, 2nd most attended since 2004) but more than DM2 (I don't have exact numbers but it seems that one had less than 350k) A great result here! :)

i hate to admit this...but SLOP's DOM and OS run are wayyyyy more impressive than FD :bravo:

@MinaTakla what's your projection for OS?? Does it have enough gas left in the tank for 520-525(which FD is estimated to make)

The fact that SLOP now is just 60 million behind Finding Dory without Australia and Italy is really impressive. I 100% agree.

And for an original that will make almost as much as DM2 and Nemo, and the highest ever non Disney original animated film WW...yea that's what impressive is.

My projection now is 490m OS for Pets and 370m DOM for a total of 860m WW (which is almost what Inside Out made).

520m OS would happen only if it made 30m USD in Australia and 25m in Italy. Possible but I don't know whether it will end up doing this or not.

The absolute ceiling for this film is about $910M: $380M NA and $530M OS. So I don't think it's a threat to Disney owning the top 5 films of 2016. The only possible threats are Inferno and Fantastic Beasts. There is a chance that SLOP beats FD in OS but I still find that probability to be <50%.

Looking at the numbers, where it finished ahead of Dory, mainly China is the only place that will amount to much OS gross, the places where it did, and will finish behind Dory and markets left for both, I don't see even a 1% chance of Pets finishing ahead of Dory OS.

Im not saying I'm correct, but what am I missing? Is 500 OS even a lock yet?  By my estimate it isn't.  I'm going back to look at the numbers again because obviously I'm overlooking something.

Pets' OS run is certainly much more impressive than Dory's, but then again the latter is a freaking disappointment so that's not saying much.

DOM, in my opinion Dory beating Drek 2 is still more impressive than Pets making 370+.

Also, Pets was always expected to do gangbuster numbers. A sort of (light and crappy, but what average moviegoer cares?) Toy Story with cats and dogs instead of toys was an extremely easy sell from the beginning.

Not to mention, everything went in its favor: Dory disappointing, IA5 bombing, better release dates, ...

500m OS (or even 470m) is HUGE for Pets. It will be the 4th highest original animated ever overseas, after Frozen, Zootopia and Inside Out. It's not just good, it's excellent considering the current exchange rate. It would have beaten IO's OS gross too.

This weekend, Pets will cross a new milestone, it will become the highest grossing non Disney original film overseas, beating KFP1's 410m OS.

Quick update of my most recent projection:

China will produce a few more millions than expected, so markets opening up to August 14: ~$385M

Russia will produce up to $10M more than expected, so markets opening up August 21: ~$45M

Opening in Brazil or the Phillipines is not consistent with Minions-level performance but better than IO/Zootopia, so remaining markets: $75M - $90M

OS Total: $505M - $520M

I'm not examining the numbers super closely right now so there's a chance I'm missing somewhere it's substantially underperformed compared to last projection. But assuming I'm not, then $500M is nearly locked - a massive underperformance in Italy (compared to DM2 or IO) would cause it to miss. Beating Dory OS is very unlikely, since the upper range of Pets is $520M and that's the lower range of Dory.
