THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS | 507.1 M overseas | 875.5 M worldwide

Recommended Posts

As the PETS run comes to its final stage, here are some notable runs for this film which is now the highest ever non Disney/Pixar original animated film of all time:

** Thanks to all users I tagged for their input on the mentioned markets**

Best OS run goes to....Russia with a tremendous run that is now third all time after just Avatar and Zootopia. (cc: @Onri)

Runner-up: Spain with a huge total that is already in the top 10 animated of all time (cc: @peludo) - AND China - with 58,5m, this is now the second highest non Disney original film ever in the market with only 15m Yen behind the #1 place holder THE CROODS (if we exclude Angry Birds because it's based on a property).

Most satisfying OS run that met or exceeded expectations goes to... Japan with 41m USD (cc: @Corpse) and still counting AND the UK with the highest opening for a non Pixar original and over 35 UK pounds total. (cc: @Heretic)

Most shocking OS run goes to.....Mexico with almost 11 M viewers, beating both Finding Dory, Inside Out and Ice Age 5. (cc: @Purple Minion). This has to be one of the highest attendance figures for Pets in terms of audience figures in a single market outside of China.

Best legs in an OS market goes to....Israel (cc: @Tower). Incredible holds and almost a 10x multiplier.

Most roller-coaster run: France. It started with what analysts considered 'OK' but has been able to top the box office there in its 4th and 6th weekends there - a very rare feat that does not happen quite often. It also beat Dory and IA5 in that market.

Most surprising run for me: South Korea where it is one of the very few markets where it beat Minions with 17m and almost beat Dory too. @yjs

Most disappointing run: Thailand. Only 1.3m is a very low number there.

Markets killed by competition: Hong Kong which could have done a lot more than 4m.

Other Great runs: Germany, Brazil and Australia.

While it may look amazing, The multiplier is actually not better than other markets once you take the inherent market conditions into account. Animations opening at the start of July always have huge legs, sometimes even better than what SLOP did. Amongst those films SLOP's legs were good but not great, Madagascar 3, Toy Story 3 and Inside Out all went over an 11x multiplier. What was more impressive about about SLOP was that it had a huge OW and then followed it up with good legs anyway allowing for such a blockbuster total.

haha and I do deserve a shoutout since I did contribute to its box office success here ;) was a cute film that was loved by the GA. Illumination is finding its foot here and replacing Dreamworks in Korea.

This ended up becoming a little pot of gold for Universal and Illumination, uh? Never expected it to reach the $750M WW threshold, not to mention a potential $850M!

Indeed. But to be fair, several users here already said this will cross 750-850m WW early this year and I was among those who thought this was very wishful thinking.

But turns out they were right!

Illumination and Universal’s animated dog tale added $9.1M in 50 territories this weekend and raised the international total to $482.8M. Worldwide, it’s at $848.2M. The final market to open was Italy this frame where it debuted at No. 1 with $5M at 525 dates and 43% market share.
