It's funny because I did initially wonder that when I saw the movie for the first time, whether it actually should've been split into two parts, or at the very least whether it needed an extra hour or so to develop its plot and characters better. Ultimately, though, I don't think so. I think the movie's main problem is just a poor allocation of time to the necessary plot threads. I maintain that the Stryker/Wolverine segment, as enjoyable as it was, should've and could've been cut entirely and the screentime allocated to Apocalypse and his Horsemen so their threads don't feel so utterly threadbare and rushed.

I completely disagree with the idea though that 'Apocalypse is too major a threat to fit in one movie' because that's just silly. No villain is 'too big for one movie'. I know Thanos has got it into people's head that these super major villains need like 10 movies to build them up to do them justice, but they really don't. A single, contained, well-told story can do it just as well.

Maybe "too big a threat" was the wrong phrasing. Too important, too big of a character. With the hype surrounding him, with his legacy as THE villain in this universe, with the scope of the conflict he represents--I think it'd be hard to introduce, develop, and kill that character in the span of a single movie and do it justice. Sure, they could've done a much better job than they did, but I think to truly accomplish the full potential afforded by this story, a six-act story would've been much better.

And while I agree that if anything were cut from the movie we have to allocate runtime elsewhere, it'd be the entire Wolverine sequence, I do understand the reason putting it in the movie beyond getting Jackman on screen. The big cliffhanger at the end of DOFP was "what's going on with Mystique and Logan", it'd be pretty jarring and borderline continuity-breaking for it to not even be addressed in the next movie. Which is why I'd have just given it more significant screen time in Part One.

How....did....the question get answered at all? They don't share a scene, we have no idea why Mystique rescued Logan or what she did with him, and we have no idea how Logan ended up in the hands of the real Stryker for the Weapon X experiment (which she would have had no knowledge about). So how did the movie address that cliff-hanger?

OK let's get this out of the way: The villain sucks. Besides the hideous makeup, he has no character traits other than the fact that he's evil. The CGI is also pretty bad for 2016.

Otherwise, this was a very good movie. While it's true that it follows a formula, if the formula is good why not stop? I loved the new Jean Grey and Cyclops, as well as Nightcrawler in what would have been a spotlight-stealing role if Quicksilver hadn't been in the film.

Yeah it was a decent film. It had its moments, but it really just kind of went scene to scene.

Most of the cast really didn't have much to do.  It was an ok spectacle though

I do think they dropped the ball with not following through with Quicksilver being Magneto's son.  You can tell it was perfect for that moment, then it seemed like someone went "hey we can leave that until next movie" :P

Even  saying all that, I still had fun and liked the movie enough that I give it at least a B

I definitely enjoyed the movie, but it's definitely a huge departure in quality from the previous ones. While it's admirable that Singer attempts to add in dozens of new characters in addition to the growing relationships between Charles, Erik, and Mystique, but it leaves a lot of things underdeveloped or flat-out uninteresting. The new actors did fine, but they didn't really have much going for them, outside of their short story arcs, and Quicksilver's reveal about Magneto being his father felt tacked on and unneeded. Not to mention, the climax felt overlong and way too small in scale for what is supposedly the X-Men's biggest baddie. That said, Charles, Erik, Quicksilver, and Mystique are likable and interesting as always, and I enjoyed Apocalypse (although I do wonder why he doesn't use his powers to make the X-Men fall into the earth). The Wolverine cameo was fun, if unneeded, and I do like the inner battle between Charles and Apocalypse. I do see plenty of potential here for the next movie to be another strong film in the franchise, so hopefully Apocalypse will lead to greener pastures in the future.

I had such a blast with this one. That is how you make a great superhero movie. It was fun and dark and filled with memorable bits. I loved Apocalypse, but more than anything else I loved Magneto. He is probably the best CBM character ever. Also, despite what everyone is saying, I really dig the new Jean. That Phoenix sequence. OMG. And the soundtrack, especially the intro one, was genius. Overall, I LOVED IT. Fox is doing such an awesome job with this franchise.

Did we all watch the same film?

Many scenes were a mess combined with many cool fanservice scenes.

Apocolyase was immortal one moment then rather blah at others.

Storm and Jean acted well but Munn was just useless eyecandy and to much focus on JLaw then on mystique.

X-Men: Apocalypse's title is rather fitting, as this is two movies in one. One film is the third X-Men film featuring a cast in the past, a series that has so far been strong thanks to great characters and intriguing stories. The other film is Apocalypse, a lumbering villain that reeks of generic destruction and overwrought monologues. Apocalypse threatens to overtake the heroes of our story, the X-Men. We may think of the X-Men as Xavier's students, but really, they're whoever Xavier's lives has touched. From Quicksilver, to Moira, to Magneto... to Scott, Jean, and Kurt. These are all X-Men and all feature strongly in this feature, although not nearly as much as they should.

Instead, it is Apocalypse who dominates the screentime and consumes everything in his path. Thematic relevance, ruined. Satisfying character arcs, gone. The only thing he leaves in his wake is skeletons of these ideas, but that's not enough. Fassbender comes out of it the strongest, but the entire ensemble is trying their hardest and it simply isn't enough. The worst thing to happen to X-Men: Apocalypse is Apocalypse himself, and the only way this film could've worked is without him in it .A disappointing conclusion that sadly holds so much unfulfilled potential. C-

As pure escapism, it mostly works - a lot of the set pieces (especially the opening sequence) are really fun to watch, and the new characters are also interesting (if underdeveloped; Team superheroes could honestly do insanely well on TV for this reason and more), but there's not much more to it then that. A lot of it feels relatively cookie-cutter for contemporary superhero films, with Apocalypse feeling like wasted potential (especially when you're working with Oscar Isaac) and unnecessary padding. The final act's climax really drags, and Apocalypse's powers seem nonsensically limitless. Is it a fun movie? Yeah, for the most part, but I feel like it's suffering from juggling too many characters and not trying hard enough to really push for something different, a problem hardly new in the superhero universe, quite frankly.

X-Men Apocalypse: The film does have some good qualities about it. My favorite being what we see with Magneto. I loved what they did with him early on and actually would of liked to seen more. Quicksilver was great even though I feel his scene in Days of Future Past was better. The film also has some pretty bad ass scenes. The main problem with this film for me was Apocalypse. He was a intimidating villain but at the same time he does some stuff early on in the film that shows his powers to a certain extend, thus leaving you sitting through the film wondering why he's holding back. Jennifer Lawerence performance felt kind of blah for some reason. I think maybe she wants out of the X-Men films. There was also a certain scene that was really bad ass but since it was shown in the last trailer, it was kind of ruined. If they didn't show that scene, it would of been even more amazing. The film also took awhile to really get going. By the 3rd act, I kinda mentally checked out. It's not the worst X-Men film but coming off of Days of Future Past it's pretty disappointing.

Grade: C+

I wasn't really that thrilled with DOFP like many were and I was expecting this to be much worse but it was surprisingly decent. It was cheesy as fuck, it had a boring villain and they clearly have run out of ways to use Magneto in an interesting way, but deep down it's a pretty decent "origin" story for the Jean Grey-Cyclops-Storm etc X-Men lineup. Also the finale where everyones band together to stop Apocalypse ringed true to me even if it was taking place in a typical disaster porn thrid act.

I know the new trilogy is all about Xavier, Magneto and Mystique but I feel this movie would be much better if the new generation was the focus and Charles, Eric, Mystique were more supporting players. At least Mystique is used in an interesting way as a symbol and inspiring figure for young mutants after the events of DOFP, but the whole Magneto lives another tragedy, turns bad then turns good was kind of white noise.

Product of a talented filmmaker who, for the first time, doesn't know what he's doing. X-Men Apocalypse is exhaustly messy and disjointed.

How sad is it that the last remaining superhero franchise that wasn't about quips, world-building and looking cool dies this way?

About as sad as the sexiest, coolest, and most talented NFL quarterback dies by way of Olivia Munn
