BFG was a great release for December, a perfect tale that would please parents and kids, but July doesn't fit. Some failures could be avoided with more thorough planning.

There was a comment on Deadline that said Spielberg had it in the contract that the release had to be 4th of July w/e or Christmas. This w/e was chosen because of Disney having Moana and Rogue One but even then X-mas would have been better for it. Being a co-production where I think Walden was the primary financier and Spielberg and Dreamworks leaving meant Disney probably had a lower priority for it when scheduling it against or near other Disney properties.

But if not for that supposed clause, it still could have had a better summer release like 2 weeks after Pets in late July. Between Pets and Pete's Dragon would have been better for it than this date.

I guess Roald Dahl adaptations not directed by Tim Burton are destined to fail. Matilda was a masterpiece and that thing sold less tickets than a piece of garbage like Resurgence.

Directed by Burton, giant Depp and a little girl

For the tea-party sequence, visual-effects guru Ken Ralston used puppets, green screen, stilts, CGI and animation to bring Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter) and Mia (Alice) meeting to life.

The last great year for cinema was 2007.

We got No County For Old Men, Atonement, There Will Be Blood, Into the Wild, Zodiac, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly, Eastern Promises, Superbad, Michael Clayton, Enchanted, The Orphanage, etc.

After that Marvel took over and it all went to shit.

2007 was the best year this century, but you forgot the best movie of them all, Ratatouille.

Surprising for Tarzan.

Horrendous Saturday drop for the Purge, expected though. Huge weekend number.

The drop is fine and typical for TP. Take out Thursday previews and it was down under 10% from Friday day. A horror 2nd sequel in a franchise that opens big, and has always been frotloaded, isn't gonna do any better.

The Pixar formula is wearing thin.

Time to come up with new stuff.

No, it's all in your head. Speak for yourself.

Inside Out was incredible, and while The Good Dinosaur was too childish/classic for some people having lost every ounce of their childhood I really loved it.

Plus, Dory is so successful, it's a clear rebuke of your statement ;)

So if P3 was to follow P2 it would end with about 85 mill. I don't think it will get a 2.4x again but a 2.2 is possible. And a 2.2 off 35 3 day gives it about 77. Pretty darn good.

2.18. Not bad for a sequel horror film but not good considering it's also buffered by holiday Sunday

And OUCH for Neighbors 2. It's gonna fall over 60% from the first domestic and WW.

BFG is not going to be a bomb. It looks like it will do about 70 here but if it makes at least 150 internationally it's far from a bomb. I think some of u need to redefine your definition of bomb.
