Weekend #s STB 59.6M, Pets 29.3M, GB and LO 21.6M, IA5 21M

Recommended Posts

Rogue Nation did 4m from previews last year for 55m OW. Star Trek targets a similar audience, should be a bit more frontloaded but so far, neither ST09 or STiD were particulary frontloaded.

5-6m from previews locks 50m OW imo.

That's a pretty huge number for Lights Out.  Some comparisons (although not all are viable since they are different time of year)

Ouija:  .9M and a 20 mill opening

The Visit:  1 mill and opened to 25 mill

Purge 2:  2.6 and almost 30

Shallows:  1.3 and 16.8

LO is going over 20 almost for sure.

MI5 also started at 8 PM, Star Trek started at 7. 55M should happen at the very least

What a summer and year for horror films. 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Conjuring 2, The Shallows, The Purge, now Lights Out. The genre is really having a comeback this year and especially this summer. And more films are coming out that also look like they'll have solid box office runs!

Paramount only has two franchises bigger than Star Trek: Mission Impossible and Transformers.

Three if you want to include WWZ.

Wouldn't say WWZ is bigger than ST in any way. We have no idea if it has staying power. Plus the past few ST films were all bigger hits than WWZ.

Edit - Talking about DOM

I'm pretty sure talking animated animal fatigue also played a role in Ice Age underperforming. It doesn't help that it's the worst of the genre.

If there was any fatigue for talking cartoon animals, Pets wouldn't be as big as it is.

I think this is confined to the Ice Age movies.

Some comparisons to Collision Course:

Toy Story 3 - 4M

Despicable Me - 590k

Monsters university - 2.6M

Despicable Me 2 - 4.7M

Rio 2 - 400k

HTTYD2 - 2M

Minions - 6.2M

Angry Birds - 800k

It only came 50k above Angry Birds...and Angry Birds had later preview times and was released when schools weren't out

So bigger than all bollywood movies as well. Impressive.

This is a Rajinikanth movie, it transcends industry borders and language :P

Apparently the movie is just ok, but since it is Rajni's first big movie in 6 years it has become an event in itself.

If Star Trek missed 50 m it would spell disaster for Paramount.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised by Ice Age's numbers. It looks like a turd, coupled with terrible reviews and is thrown in during a time when families just got through Dory, SLOP, and The BFG.
