It's kind of sad that Blue Sky's next project after The Peanuts Movie ends up being this garbage.

It's also sad that IA5 will beat Peanuts WW.

Don't cry for IA.  That franchise has money hand over fist over the years.  No matter what it finishes with this time, the franchise has been milked and milked and milked again.

Yeah they have made mad money especially OS. The budgets haven't been big either.

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Star Trek Beyond topped Thursday night previews with a solid $5.5 million from 3,100 locations. For comparison, Ant-Man brought in $6.4 million in mid-July last year and opened with $57.2 million, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brought in $4.6 million in early August 2014 and opened with $65.5 million and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes brought in $4.1 million and went on to open with $72.6 million. All told, this is a preview number that really doesn't give us any clear signal as to how the film will perform this weekend, but it is more than the $2 million Star Trek Into Darkness brought in from 336 IMAX previews on Wednesday and more than the $4 million Star Trek delivered from Thursday previews back in 2009. Both sequels went on to gross more than $70 million on opening weekend.

Fox started Thursday previews for Ice Age: Collision Course at 5PM and the film brought in $850,000 from 2,804 theaters. The closest comparison is the $800,000 The Angry Birds Movie brought in on Thursday night earlier this year before it opened with $38.1 million.

Finally, New Line's Lights Out brought in $1.8 million, the same as what 10 Cloverfield Lane brought in on Thursday night earlier this year before opening with $24.7 million. For additional comparisons. Insidious: Chapter 2 and Insidious: Chapter 3 both brought in right around $1.5 million on Thursday night and opened with $40.2 million and $22.6 million respectively. While that may be a large gap between the two openings it does toward suggesting Lights Out could deliver a $20+ million weekend. Working against that theory is the $1.5 millionThe Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death delivered on Thursday night before opening with $15 million, but that is more the exception than the rule for films with this kind of Thursday performance.

lol did the human characters get wiped off the face of the planet after the first movie?

Eh, in the first film, I believe the humans were traveling away from the area where they had settled after the sabretooths attacked, so I suppose it could be argued that they're miles away.

That and Blue Sky likely have forgotten about them

I agree. And I feel that way for Shrek too, but that is not a popular opinion due to Shrek 2 which imo is over-rated.

Yeah, watched Shrek 2 in theaters and was puzzled why everyone was going bananas over it.

I loved Shrek 2 when it first came out. While I don't think it's as great now I still think it's up in Dreamworks top movies.

Considering how knee deep in summer we are, isn't IA5's 850k too low, that too for a sequel?

Closest summer comparison I could find is Planes 2 which also skewed younger and had $.45m in previews and opened to $17.5m and that had previews starting at 7pm and not 5pm which should make some difference with that age group.

Looks like the life span of animated franchises ends around movie 4 or 5.

That's kind of true for MOST franchises, in the Blockbuster era, not named Bond, Star Wars, Star Trek and I might argue Friday the 13th. Not counting early cinema fare of Tarzan, Thin Man etc.

Lethal Weapon: 4

Die Hard: 5

Pirates/Carib: 5 (jury out on beyond this)

Transformers: 5 (jury also will be out)

Underworld: 5 (jury again)

I suppose the modern exceptions in the 2000 era would be Mission Impossible(#6 is coming),Resident Evil, Saw(done at 7?), #6 on it's way, X-men Universe and of course the MCU is it's own thing almost.
