How many franchises experienced shrinkage this year?

The Huntsman

MCU

Alice

Neighbors

X-men

Ninja Turtles

Now You See Me

Independence Day

Ghostbusters

Ice Age

Star Trek

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 dropped 3/4th's from the first one (but that was always a given). And Zoolander 2 couldn't even come close to matching the first's modest gross despite 15 years of inflation.

Star Trek Beyond is a solid/competent/fun movie. The problem with it, and with the new Star Wars too, is that they're both uninspired and not particularly meaningful.  These are supposed to be sci-fi epics that can use their respective universes to speak to and explore radical ideas (of inclusiveness, justice, ethical ways of being, etc) within the safety of their fantastical/futuristic worlds. On a superficial level they may nod to some of these ideas; however, they ultimately feel safe and timid and calculated, rather than truly exploring anything substantive, and thus fail to inspire. I didn't leave either movie feeling galvanized or awakened. IMO, of course.

Peace,

Mike

How does TFA lack depth?

The First Order is pretty good analogy for the rise of neo fascism around the world.

It's not easy to think of many blockbusters more relevant to the challenges facing this generation.

Audiences threw cold water on a lot of franchises.

BORN5 is doing well.

No more shrinkage I guess (ROGUE ONE is a spin-off so can't compare with SW7).

Its bound to happen. There's more franchises than ever and only so many BO dollars. no matter how good a year is for quality movies, it seldom goes up by 10% YoY and some of that is inflation. they can drop 150m+ on 50 franchise movies and you're still going to get just 10-15 200m+ totals

I think we see a lot more franchises bite the dust in the crowded large budget market

Despite a lower domestic take, Now You See Me 2 overseas gross will actually increase comparatively to its predecessor despite currency headwinds. The others listed did not or will not get that chance.

Ghostbusters only shrinks when adjusting for inflation while the rest shrink without adjusting. Doesn't seem fair.

No one has ever felt awakened after walking out of any of the movies featuring what are essentially space wizards wielding swords of energy in various colors. What in the blue hell are you talking about?

Hi DealWithIt,

To awaken can mean to cause someone to become aware, to enlighten, to rouse/stir up a feeling. There are many films that have left me feeling awakened and enlightened, and some of those films have been fantasy/sci-fi films. Indeed, I think sci-fi films/stories are in a way uniquely positioned to do so because they can explore new, creative ideas in alternate universes from our own.

Peace,

Mike

I would think that is absolutely fair.  You want to really say it increased based on a 30 year time gap?

Ghostbusters is dead in the water.  Not only was the domestic box office very meh, but it is not performing well at all overseas.  Even worse is the merchandise is turning out to be very poor and most stores are trying to unload everything on clearance.

I am pretty sure we won't get either another Trek movie with this team

We will 100% get another one. Beyond did low end Trek but again the fanbase has a size. Add Hemsworth hope you get back over 200m domestic and crack 300 OS with Thor. They will atleast try that. a 4th is happening. And If for some reason it pulls a Voyage home , you can expect a 5th too.

Sometimes Deadline gets it right

However, one studio’s success, in this case, is another’s misery as the mostly male demo heads to Jason Bourne, Paramount’s over $185M budgeted Star Trek Beyondlooks to fall over 60% in its second weekend even as it crosses $100M — a milestoneGhostbusters finally accomplished in its third weekend out. Ouch and ouch.

Huge drop for Star Trek Beyond - great reviews don't seem to have helped it much in the face of an awful marketing campaign. Ghostbusters losing ground to The Heat rapidly, it started 7M higher than The Heat on OW and will be 7M behind it when this weekend ends.

Mattel don't think so, source: Variety http://variety.com/2016/film/news/mattel-strong-ghostbusters-toy-sales-1201820557/

What do you mean not well at all overseas? It's performed well in its first big markets.
