'Thor: Ragnarok' Wows India With 32 Cr./$4.9M Weekend, Hollywood's 2nd Best Debut There This Year

In the first two days of its opening weekend in India, Thor: Ragnarok has left Transformers: The Last Knight in its dust, grossing 21.9 crore rupees on Friday and Saturday to trounce the Transformers sequel’s 18 crore 3-day opening, thus claiming the honor of second-best Hollywood movie debut in India this year.

Adding a projected 10 crore/$1.5 million Sunday gross for the Chris Hemsworth-starring Marvel picture takes it to 32 crore/$4.9 million for the weekend. That’s the best start yet by any of the MCU’s Thor movies in India. In fact, it’s more than both of the previous Thor films earned combined in their entire India theatrical runs.

In addition to toppling Transformers 5, Thor: Ragnarok also out-earned the 2017 debuts of such other Hollywood tent-poles as The Mummy, Dunkirk, Wonder Woman, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Only Spider-Man: Homecoming had a better opening weekend, with 41.7 crore

Ragnarok’s debut tally has tripled the $1.6 million earned by Thor: The Dark World in the opening frame of its November, 2013 release. The latter film went on to earn a lifetime total of $3.6 million in India, a 2.25 multiple.

If the new film can also generate at least the same 2.25 opening weekend multiple it could actually finish with a bigger box office total than Spider-Man: Homecoming’s 72.25 crore/$11.1 million final India result, which would make it the year's biggest Hollywood release. That would be a stunning accomplishment, since Spider-Man has consistently proven to be India’s favorite movie superhero across the franchise’s six releases.

People are actually jazzed about Thor 3...adding hulk to the mix helps A LOT. Plus it's that season when university and many other exams get over and youngsters want to go watch movies. Perfect release.

Already opened markets saw an overall 40% drop. Holds were strong in such plays as Belgium (+4%), Brazil (even), France (-26%), New Zealand (-34%), Australia (-35%), Poland (-35%), Portugal (-35%), Singapore (-36%), Denmark (-36%), the UK (-38%) and South Africa (-39%).

Fast 8 is the highest grosser this year at 99cr. Should beat homecoming as that was the biggest hollywood disappointment this year. It did less than both asm movies. Also the WoM for thor 3 is the best for a hollywood movie this year.

Yeah those are fantastic drops, period. This should definitely hit 500m OS from here.

It's already at 307 million overseas.

I am sure it can get another 190 million.

The holds in hold over markets seems solid.

China will add 45 leaving 148 mill to remaining markets. That should be possible

UK update

Thor: Ragnarok might have been dethroned, but can be happy with a respectable 36% drop (excluding previews) on its way to a $6m (£4.6m) second weekend.

Disney’s latest Marvel offering has now fought to $27.3m (£20.8m) in the UK, making it the biggest Thor outing to date, ahead of Thor: The Dark World’s $26.4m (£20.13m).

In terms of overall Marvel films, Thor: Ragnarok is already the tenth highest-grossing film and will soon overtake Iron Man 2 ($27.8m/£21.18m) and Doctor Strange ($30.4m/£23.2m).

It was at 306 yesterday at boxofficemojo with estimates. So it increased 2.38 million with actuals (according to BOM anyway).

Okay. I just saw the number above

I'm coming up with about 540m total overseas.  If I could I'd make a club for Thor > JL worldwide.

Could feasibly go over GV2 worldwide with that. 2.65 multi domestically could be tough but seems within the realms of possibility IMO.
