Uhh lol from my GF's description of Sing I don't think I've heard of a more racist movie in ages. Asian stereotypes, extremely offensive black stereotypes, and a pig named Rosarita or something with 20 piglets? I mean, did this ... go right over the heads of some viewers? Or what? Because it took about a 3 sentence description of some of this movie and I already was shocked and thought she must be joking. Sure enough if you read a bit, there are a bunch of people who found Sing racist. It sounds like something I can't believe making it into a mainstream movie frankly. In today's sensitive world, wow, I guess if you make an animated kids film you can get away with murder. I'm no SJW, but yikes, those scenes sound sure to offend.

My screening for Rogue One tonight was pretty packed for a Sunday night. Reserved seating was pretty much all sold out for all shows when I checked as well. I don't want to heighten my expectations too much but it should be a pretty good number for Sunday.

Corporations are only faceless when one forgets that they are made up of talented people, many of whom work darn hard and take pride in their work.  When a Corporation gathers enough of those talents to provide products that people are willing to spend their hard earned money to purchase to the tune of about $3B, that's worth noticing and acknowledging.

I still find the sports-team like support for Disney to be bizarre.

Media conglomerates definitely have some very talented and hard-working people involved, but there is much more than talent and hard-work in this industry. There's also corruption, collusion with state officials and agencies, opportunism etc etc etc...

Sure, but we have more than enough to be cynical about already. It's not a bad thing to acknowledge something positive.

I'm convinced you can read anything as racist if you're looking for it. I won't try to persuade you to see it, but really, the characterizations are no worse than your average Nick or CN cartoon.

Yeah, I know Mad Max is hugely popular especially here, but I'll be honest I was underwhelmed. I actually liked it better the first time. I think my over-reaction to that movie is because I tend to do that sometimes -- guilty as charged -- of overreacting the opposite way when I hear people giving undue praise to something. To me, for instance, Gravity was a B- movie. It had some fantastic cinematography, truly awesome shots, and it WAS really exciting! The movie's pacing was one of its greatest assets. Clooney was hilarious. It was an overall good movie. What I didn't enjoy was the poor acting by Bullock (I am just going to say "woof woof, cry cry, woof woof, cry cry" and you should get why I didn't enjoy the performance) and the fact that Gravity is on the same plane of existence as Transformers or Independence Day, only not as good as either of those movies, yet it is given praise like it's The Godfather. I am not a hater, Gravity is definitely a solid movie, but it's a popcorn blockbuster. It doesn't have some deeper message, it's not a thoughtful film in any respect, it's just sheer spectacle.

The same is true with Mad Max. It's one of the most mindless movies I've ever seen. I still gave it a B after i saw it the first time, because the action and explosions are unquestionably top notch. The cheesy villains, lack of any coherent plot whatsoever, and general silliness of it all make it a very solidly B movie. I don't think it ever aspired to be more than that. The idea that it could be talked about like it's this cinema-changing Oscar worthy movie that belongs on the same level as things like Birdman or The Big Short to me is just ludicrous. It's laughably funny, really, I mean I love it that people want to elevate a mindless blockbuster to that level because, hey, sure beats praising some of the boring Oscar bait I usually see held up to such high levels. That being said, it's hard not to laugh at the idea of Mad Max and Gravity as "awards movies" or as esteemed masterpieces of cinema.

Of course, I fully realize that people will like what they like, and if someone thinks those movies are the greatest things ever, hey, so be it. We all have our own tastes. I just... don't really get it. My mind cannot understand logically why you'd put Gravity or Mad Max on a different plane than Transformers. They're all big dumb action movies with nothing to offer but pretty spectacle. "

I've seen some comments about the gorillas in Sing being perceived as racist.  There were even a few articles on it.  If true, it's nothing new, sadly.  Casual racism in animation has existed for ages, though it seems more common in animated series than it is in movies (see: looney tunes and characters like Speedy Gonzales, etc etc).  Animals being analogous to different races is certainly not a new occurrence (a fact that zootopia cashed in on, though its lines were less directly defined and it was more of an overall 'racism/sexism/xenophobia' message).

I think if people are going into a movie like Sing and getting upset at racial stereotypes because a pig has too many kids or a gorilla represents a black person, I mean come on guys are you being serious? These are animals. They are singing animals. There's no racism involved at all whatsoever in this. I think that's bloody ridiculous. Some of guys are trying too hard.

I even read a review of la la land where some guy complained that it was racist towards Chinese people. Because there's Apparently one scene where a bunch of people go out to dinner and they talk about some sort of negative stereotypes in China. Now if you were going into la-la land and picking out one scene that seems to be racist and not commenting on the rest of the movie then you are just simply looking to find racism in every single facet of life. Sometimes films are just films.

I agree that in general people try to find racism everywhere and no surprise when they find it since they were looking so hard they'd identify anything as racist. But as filmmakers you have to be somewhat cautious about using traditionally racist stereotypes, too.
