Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | May 5, 2023 | The 9th most profitable film of 2023

Just saw GQ’s James Gunn interview where he lists his Top 5 comic book films and his runner ups and yeah, Marvel Studios just lost their best director and storyteller while DC Studios made a deal of a lifetime. The man gets it.

Legacy is going to be amazing

It might be my most anticipated movie not already in production next to Secret Wars.

Also, the MCU needs the Russo Bros. and Markus and McFeely back. Nevermind that their output outside the MCU is questionable with their Netflix joints. The power vacuum with James Gunn going to form DC Studios with Pete Safran is just too big. Also maybe bring back Jon Favreau back to the fold.

Kinda. The MCU needs talented writers and fresh blood if it wants to remain in play and in favor for audiences.

Sure, but also proved talent with that world. Marvel Studios just lost who is arguably their best director and writer. You can’t just go with up and coming fresh new voices in a situation like this imho.

Unlike people insisting Doctor Strange was a bomb...at 900+ million?

SOme people don't get that streaming has made deep cuts into theater sales.....easily the worst bite since the coming of Television in the late 1940's,which cut theater attendence nearly in half.

700 Million is now what a billion used to be.

Favreau never left, really. just wanted to do some different things.

I am not convinced the MCU is dead...Feige has the ability to pull rabbits out of his hat.

And I don't trust Zaslev; he is a micromanger and might well try to interefe with Gunn.

I’m not saying the MCU is dead, far from it. What I’m saying is that James Gunn, the Russo Bros. and Markus and McFeely leaving almost back to back since Endgame leaves an enormous power vacuum.

I don’t trust Loveness with Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars either. I wasn’t a fan of his comic book writing back in the day and while I’m among those that don’t go that hard on Quantumania, I do think that one could argue that Peyton Reed did the best with the script and the budget he was given.

The MCU still has some of the greatest filmmakers and storytellers in the business working in these films. I loved Phase 4 a lot more than Phase 2, and WGA strike not withstanding, I’m hopeful for Phase 5 and 6. I think both Wakanda Forever and Shang-Chi delivered some of the most brutal and beautiful action choreography scenes in the superhero genre, both Phase 4 and Phase 5 have two of my favorite superhero films of all time with No Way Home and Vol. 3, but it’s undeniable that Gunn leaving the MCU leaves a void that needs to be filled.

My understanding is yeah, let’s go for some new blood, I’m very excited with what Shawn Levy will bring with Deadpool 3, but we also need to get back the Russo Bros. and hopefully Jon Favreau too. I know that Favreau is busy with Star Wars, but maybe it’s time for a comeback in the next ten years.

I know I’ve been singing this movie’s praises A LOT lately, but I’m genuinely excited to watch the legacy of this trilogy grow over time. I really think this is going to go down as one of those franchises that resonates with a generation. And I’m glad I was there to watch all 3 in theaters.

It’s wild. It’s the space opera of our generation, and I couldn’t agree with you more. We’ve witnessed history, and I do think that the legend of the Guardians of the Galaxy will keep growing further. Glad to be a part of the crew that witnessed all of the MCU at the movies so far too (Black Widow not withstanding).

Feels optimistic. People will forget this movie in a month like everything big these days. I don't want to go too off-topic, but the way people consume things these days has just changed so much that I doubt any movie or franchise (except the MCU at large) rn will resonate with any generation.
