A best comparison would be Annabelle: Creation, even Deadline mentioned that the main reason why the movie over performed, was because the teens girls showed in droves, but even in this situation, the share was only 19%, behind the over 25 demo. 19% for the 13-17 is not bad at all. The over 25 will always be bigger than the 13-17, (the 25-39 alone should be twice as big in general) In 2016 ticket sold by age group: 02-11: 11% 12-17: 13% 18-24: 16% 25-39: 24% 40-49: 11% 50-59: 12% 60+: 13% The 60+ tend to be bigger than the 12-17, let alone all the 25+ (60% of the ticket sold) 19% for that demo would be 50% more than the average movie, and maybe a bigger number than for Guardian of the Galaxy 2. I know, that’s why I said that this demo was the main reason why Annabelle over-performed, but we’re discussing if turning a teen oriented movie like HDD in Rated R would be a good idea. Ouija 1 drew a massive 75% under 25 (not sure about the teens, but I remember reading that it was around 50%) in it’s OW, turning a movie like HDD into Rated R would bring that percentage to 20% at best, then, it would need the adult audience to come to the rescue, and unless a movie is really appealing, this demo is not a guarantee in a Horror movie, so, it would be replacing a demo that is guaranteed to show up for one that may not appear at all, it’s a lot riskier. Zakiyyah6
The horror movies that have performed the best have at least decent reviews behind them. Mind you being in the sixties on Rotten Tomatoes for a horror movie is like getting an 80% rating for a comic book movie. You have a point, but let’s not start pretending that these movies are always being trashed like it was few years ago, since last year, we have a lot more fresh Horror movies than rotten ones, the genre is slowly becoming a critical darling.
