Fuck it, favourite films of the last 5 years IMO. Not super definitive cause I might still be forgetting some movies, and especially with the newer ones it'll take time for them to sink in. Not the best movies but my favourites.

If Wonder Woman was just an SJW thing the film wouldn't be headed for 375+mil off of a 103mil  opening weekend. Good word of mouth doesn't lie, especially concerning the front loaded Comic book movie genre.

 

The critics creamed their pants over Logan and yet it's legs were borderline shit. It's legs do not reflect those rave reviews. Alien Covenant got solid reviews but had horrible legs because the average moviegoer hated it. Even with good reviews Wonder Woman was not guaranteed good legs. Wonder Woman is succeeding the same reason Get Out succeeded. It's a well made film coherent film that basically works.

Just because you don't get something out of a movie doesn't mean everybody who does is full of shit or pushing some agenda.

 

Not saying that the numbers prove under any doubt that they are wrong for every case, but female director get in average worst critics than men directors (from male or female critics, both gender has that same difference). Stats seem to show that clearly it need much more than that.

I won't rank but the most greatest and innovative movies released in last 3 years that will probably become classics are: La La Land, Batman v Superman, Mad Max Fury Road and It Follows. Those movies will still be remembered and studied and appreciate in 100 years.

Since when is a 2.56x multiplier bad for a super hero movie? Especially an R-rated one that literally has ZERO appeal to families/kids AND had to compete with several well received blockbusters AND is coming from a franchise that's not even known for having huge domestic numbers. By all means cream your pants over Wonder Woman but there's absolutely zero reason to diminish/talk shit about another well received and critically praised film within the same genre.

I'm not diminishing Logan. I consider Logan an over performer domestically and internationally. I didn't think that Logan would hit 600mil I think I thought it would hit 550mil at best. I'm just saying that it's legs were mediocre at best for the sort of reviews that it got. Those weren't regular, it's good reviews those were it's an all time great comic book movie reviews. If the reviews were regular good I wouldn't even be mentioning the legs. And I'm not claiming it should have brought in more families, that wasn't it's audience, adults were. I'm saying that if it's such an undeniably stellar movie in the same vane as The Dark Knight then why weren't its legs better? Not Wonder Woman good but better than 2.56.

Extreme audience resistance build up (maybe even more than something like Civil War), the movie need audience to have watched previous entry (and not good one), legs cannot express themselves in those case, in both case low legs are because of a combination of genre/big OW/large resistance.

 

A movie like Wonder Woman is pretty much 100% free of any previous requirement, mouth of word can fully express itself like for an original movie (the not has high as the best original movie is just because of the crazy high opening weekend)

Okay I've got another question. Why, even in a less front-loaded time like 2000, couldn't X-Men get a 3.0 multiplier? The X-Men movie series wasn't connected to some large mythology at that time.

Because it's a rated r western style film. The style of the film itself AND its rating holds it back from making a ton of money like your typical comic book film. Why else do you think Fox refused to make a rated R Wolverine movie for the 17 years that Hugh Jackman portrayed the character until Deadpool came along, made a shit ton of money and Fox realized "hey we can make R-rated comic book films and they can make just as much money as the other comic book films made." 

 

Make The Dark Knight rated R and you take away a good portion of its audience. It still would have done gangbusters because it's a great film but it definitely would see a decline in its box office. Also in terms of popularity there is no denying that Batman is far more popular than Wolverine which also helps the box office. 

 

Wonder Woman is having a run that we have never ever seen before. And that's the exact reason why you can't call Logan's run "shit." Simply put. It wasn't. It was a very good run for an R-rated X-men film. The bottom line is just that Wonder Woman is having a run that is THAT GREAT. Like you could compare every other critically praised comic book film that's come out in recent years, compare their runs to Wonder Woman and they'd look like "shit" too.

Or like Trek (and more and more in the MCU)  it has a very die hard fan base that goes early.  It's not as if the X-Men 2 and X-Men 3 don't adjust to about $315m domestic.  The first Wolverine also adjusts to an opening over $100m so the audience was there but the movie was bad and hurt the franchise and dented the X-en franchise as well.

 

WW may have opened lower due the previous horrible DCEU movies so more people took a wait and see approach.  It's also unlike other CBM's skewed more female than male, and more older female which often means nice long legs since women are less likely in a rush to go to a movie o/w.
