the bolded part had me rolling

"We are trying to please the fans and also give them a new experience," says producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. "Plus, there’s a new audience introduced to the franchise every 10 years, and we have an obligation to that new audience."

sure, that's why Paramount keep making these shit movies, out of obligation.

Yeah, if it's "torture porn" it's definitely not going to appeal to the audiences drawn to the "triumph of the spirit" racism movies.

but I mean there's still a huge audience for films that aren't like that Straight outta Compton and Get Out are examples. If it wasn't for Nate Parker's controversy I feel Birth of a Nation would have done pretty well as well. Detroit has less going for it and there seems to be less buzz but again if reviews are really strong and it's a great movie that wont' matter much. But that's an if.

I kinda expect it to get a lot of negative think pieces though honestly.

I hear that the violence is in the vein of Zero Dark Thirty, which is not that brutal to me, so I have no idea from where the 'torture porn" comments are originating.

One person on Letterboxd and another on Awards Watch have said the film gets very brutal and borderline torture porn. The Detroit riots weren't sunshine, light, and joy, after all.

At the end of the day, no matter how much we think we can assess trends and/or patterns, audiences will like whatever connects with them, regardless of what season, political climate, or social background is informing the movies. Wonder Woman 's and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 's smashing success seem to prove the whole "audiences want to see uplift and fun!" sentiment, yet SM:H's meh numbers and awful drops disprove it. Apes' mediocre tally seems to prove that dark-and-depressing is not good for the summer, yet Dunkirk comes in and disproves it. That's just the way things go.

Haven't seen it, but isn't the whole historical event of Dunkirk a triumph of the human spirit and courage in the face of adversity...and ultimately, isn't it one of the "happiest endings" you could get in a brutal war...I mean, when all looked completely lost, the allies (in real life) successfully evacuated almost all their troops to fight another day...

So, if Dunkirk the movie is even close to Dunkirk the reality, not sure that's disproving the point...
