This didn't really work for me. So much of the book is spent in his mind, so you always know what he's thinking and feeling. In a movie you don't get that. So it's hard to know just how much this relationship affected him. Especially since they don't actually get together until the last third of the movie.

Yes, the movie is beautiful and well acted, but I don't think it's a successful adaptation of the book.

after sitting on this for a while, I give it a C+

Sorry, I hated it.

Sorry I am a tad confused, what is wrong with banging 16 year olds? They're hot. My ex was 16, she was gorgeous and crazy in bed. It didnt work out between us but I wouldn't mind another one. If it's legal what is the issue. 16 yr olds are old enough to consent, couple hundred years ago this was perfectly normal, whats the problem?

As for the movie, I am curious to see it, hope I don't like it so I can be that one detractor, on the other hand hope I will like it because I liked the last movie

Loved it. As well as the book.

Beautifully acted. Great music and scenery.

I do not think the cirtical success of this has much to do with them being gay or bi. I think the movie (and the book) beautifully capture that immense crush that I think many people experience at that age Elio's in. That raw emotions that never really come back even when you finally and truly fall in love. A crush that is not only nice but sometimes almost hurting you.

I do not know... I certainly can remember feeling like that at that age once or twice and this movie perfectly captures that feeling or the memory of it.

I really wonder why some people find that relationship troubling becaus eof the age difference or the movie glorified because of its homosexual and bisexual content. I really cannot see with what mindset one had to watch this movie to get those feelings... but okay.

Yes, with that kind of age difference there come certain problems. Elio can surely be hurt in a damaging way at that age and with the state he is in (that can happen at any age but in that late time of puberty it is certainly happening easier than later). But Oliver does not take advantage... he actually takes care of Elio in a way and knows he has to be careful not to harm him emotionally. He is behaving responsible.

I know it was legal in the movie and that age of consent is legal in many states. A lot of people still consider 16 year olds not adults yet and it's a power thing.

Again, everyone else seems to feel differently about this film then I did. I'm not saying they are wrong. I just didn't see what they did and part of the reason was the relationship and the age difference between the actors.

Well that's not me. I find it weird due to the age difference not the LGBTQ content. Thelma is in my top 10 of the year. So is Ladybird.

Really really liked Professor Marston and The Wonder Women (B+) and Battle Of The Sexes was flawed but good (B).

As far as the actual sex scenes, no film pushed it as far as Call Me By Your Name. No other film has the main character going at it with a peach. I thought Thelma did all of that best but that's my opinion.

I found the plots and characters in all of those films more compelling than CMBYN. It felt like there was a lot more conflict and thanks to that, I was a lot more invested. I think Rebecca Hall put on a hell of a performance as Elizabeth Marston. She showed so much uncertainty with no dialogue. You could just feel it.

And I loved the first half of Moonlight. It's when he left adolescence that the film lost me.

This movie feels more blah since I have watched the other Oscar contenders. Ranks far below I, Tonya and the Shape of Water.

This movie is a good film but I did check my phone multiple times during it. I hate to say this, but it did bore me.

The age thing didn't bother me that much. Still felt weird though. I am not holding it against the film.

I couldn't connect with this on any level. Consider me in the camp of folks who think a film like this wouldn't get nearly the kind of critical raves it did if Elio's gender were switched, especially right now. Putting aside the uneasiness about the relationship itself, it's a dull story only brought to life by the pretty Italian villa backdrops and piano soundtrack backing.

I would never watch this movie again. It would not be getting this praise if it was about any other relationship because there's nothing there. It's so shallow that it has the plot of a soft core porn at times.

I had to see it to see what was so emotional about the ending and really regret it. I wish I could have that 2+ hours back. I really liked the first half of Moonlight but this made me uncomfortable from that first shoulder grab.

With all that's going on in Hollywood, it doesn't help that Timothy looks a lot younger than 17 in this. And I know the age of consent is younger in Italy but that doesn't mean this type of relationship should be glorified on film. Sorry, I don't get what critics saw in this.

The scenery was beautiful and the score was nice. The acting was authentic before it went full in....that's about it. Never again. This just wouldn't end.

I thought the emotional ending was going to be one one of them falling off the cliff during that trip. Shows how badly I wanted the credits to roll.

C-

How is this a softcorn porn? A lot of movies show way more this movie.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Superbad

40 Year Virgin

Something About Mary

The Shape of Water

Lady Bird

It's...decent? I loved Chamalet and thought Stulhbarg was great too, but I never bought the romance because Oliver was so stoic - I get that it's implied that he's been in previous relationships and that he's not in that 'I've a crush so I want to die/I've never been happier' phase that Elio is in, but it just means that the whole thing is more of a Chamalet showcase than anything else.

It was a beautiful movie, and the age gap thing isnt a big deal to me, it seems more of a problem to Americans than Europeans frankly, mainly because we dont treat ours as children. 17 year old me would have sold a leg for a night with Armie Hammer, and 17 year olds arent the naive easily predated on snowflakes many like to think, especially by a 24 year old (as the character is supposed to be).

I saw this way before I signed up for this forum. This movie is boring as hell. When I went to get a re-fill of my popcorn there were two guys literally sleeping and snoring in the back of the theater. It was kind of funny. The best thing from this is my discovery of the musician that did some of the songs on the soundtrack; Sufjan Stevens song for this film "mystery of love" is phenomenal.

"I know nothing, Oliver."

Call Me by Your Name is an emotional achievement. Elio is all of us, equally fascinated and frightened by the idea of love. As he takes the risks necessary to discover for himself, every single chance is punctuated with pure humanity. Part of this is thanks to Guadagnino's truly phenomenal direction, subdued and always knowing where to focus within a scene. The rest is made by Chalamet's spectacular performance, a tour de force of acting that makes Elio seem like everyone we know, including ourselves.

Hammer is excellent too, but Stuhlberg steals the show. Both are fantastic supporting performances in a film that still remains anchored by its lead. The entire ensemble does well, and the cinematography is outright gorgeous. The use of music is really lovely too, with classical pieces making Italy come to life, and the Sufjan Stevens songs really elevating poignant moments. Call Me by Your Name is a remarkable work of cinema, and one of the most empathetic films of the year thanks to a strong screenplay, excellent direction, and a truly remarkable performance by Timothée Chalamet. A

Never going to watch this movie because the age gap is fucking icky.

Why did you bump this thread that hasn’t been posted in for a year just to say you’re never gonna watch it? It’s a review thread. Dumb.
