'Thor: Ragnarok' Delivers $121M Domestic Opening Along with Record China Debut

With an estimated $121 million, Disney and Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok delivered the seventh largest opening for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, topping the $117 million debut for Spider-Man: Homecoming earlier this year. On average, films in the MCU deliver 2.72x multipliers, which would put Ragnarok's domestic run over $330 million if it merely holds to the average, but we're expecting it to play a bit better thanks in large part to strong reviews and opening weekend audience reception.

To go along with the film's "A" CinemaScore, opening weekend audiences were 56% male vs. 44% female, and of the overall audience, 63% were over the age of 25. One sign Disney and Marvel has to enjoy, beyond the fact Ragnarok debuted with $35+ million more than Thor: The Dark World, is audience demos were closer to a 50/50 split than its predecessor, whose opening weekend audience was 62% male.

Among Thor's new markets this weekend, the estimated $55.6 million opening in China is the largest ever for a November release as is the film's estimated $5.2 million debut in India. Additional openings saw an estimated $10.8 million in Mexico, $8.9 million (including previews) in Germany, $3.5 million in Japan and $3.7 million in Russia. At this point in the release cycle, Disney estimates Thor: Ragnarok is tracking +8% ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, +28% ahead of Doctor Strange and +59% ahead of Thor: The Dark World based on current exchange rates.

Thats a very good male/female split which bodes well for its legs

Will be more interesting  when it becomes the first MCU solo film without RDJ to hit 300m domestic and 800m WW. Cap couldn't do that.

Solo?  Come now, Thor had the Revengers.

Cap 3 would probably have done $800m WW sans RDJ & Co.   Predictions were in that area and higher before CW was announced.

What it wouldn't have done was $1.15B without RDJ - and neither has any other comic book movie.

So what's next? Will there be more Thor movies with Hemsworth? is this the last one he's contracted for? do you think he'll sign a new contract or give up the hammer and do more ~serious movies? Does he need Thor anymore?

maybe he'll keep doing thor until he can lead a hit without it. Taliban v. Horses: Dawn of Justice might be the one.

I hope there are no more Thor movies.  I've come to terms with the fact that none of them are interesting to me.  The only reason I thought Ragnarok would be any different is they show off their greatest assets in the trailers and most scenes that aren't hinted at in them are generally pretty fucking weak (save for a few exceptions)

Of course you hate a franchise which had a movie directed by a British legend and a New Zealand legend. American teenage trash.

Shit just isn’t interesting to me.  I really like Branagh as a director and Taika is probably a good director that was screwed over by Marvel cramming in forced comedy (haven’t seen any of his other movies so I can’t really judge him yet.  maybe that’ll change soon)

I could say I hope there are no more Transformers movies, since I find them largely uninteresting, but I won’t because no one makes me watch them. For those of us who actually like certain movies in the Thor franchise, I’ll say I hope there are more movies and that they’re directed by Taika. Humor is subjective after all and I felt that his style of humor was a big reason it landed for me.

I wonder when disney will replace the russos with taika. he did a wonderful job.

We can't replace those Russos...they have the MCU's lone "perfect" movie 😂😂. The Winter Soldier...Utter perfection! The 2014 oscar snub is one of tbe biggest miscarriages of justice in history!

Why do you think that? I believe he's the Marvel actor with the most potential to break out.

Because he had a lot of flops outside of Marvel. Evan wants to be done with acting.RDJ will only do side roles now, Ruffalo has been in lot dramtic roles but I think he would do a solo film. Johansson is already successful so I think she walk away after Avengers 4. Renner will go back to dramitic work. I do not see Marvel hiring him back.

He should do a comedy as the lead, he's proven not just with Thor but Vacation and Ghostbusters that he can do comedy really well.
