I'm struggling to find out why:

a. they're releasing this in America in the first place after the 2nd one made like 8M

b. it's releasing on a Thursday

A Thursday release date isn't weird if you think about it as having previews in the morning.

The second movie was a big hit in every country apart from the US. Made 150M OS compared to the 130M OS the first one did and actually increased in the UK as well.

They're also cheap to make, the last film cost $45m and made $160m WW, that's more than enough reason to make a third and likely final film.

I assume like Bridget Jones, Universal will give it a small release in the US and it'll be seen as pocket change compared to what it'll make OS

It is a missed opportunity and a disappointment that they opted not to give Daniel Kaluuya's sidekick character from the last film a spot in this new film, honestly. Reincluding Daniel Kaluuya in this film could have possibly given this film an extra kick of buzz, especially in America.

have to imagine that daniel kaluuya, about to get an oscar nomination, maybe thinks himself a bit above sidekick in the johnny english franchise these days.

Still, it's a franchise. A wise actor would find time for both prestigious films and questionable-quality franchise films. You have to steadily build to lucrative spots in the industry like Kristen Stewart and Dwayne Johnson, doing a mix of smaller films and bigger films before becoming a bona-fide headliner. And it'd be a wrong approach to acting, as well as humility itself, to put yourself above certain roles in a stubborn sort of way.

No matter what the actor thinks, an inclusion in Johnny English 3 could have certainly been a test of sorts to gauge his star/drawing potential after his sudden burst onto the scene. Because if he had rejoined the Johnny English cast, and if Johnny English 3 were to perform better than the last film globally with him in the cast, we would know exactly why this new film would have gained this newfound success.

But I'm still happy to see Kaluuya aim for bigger roles and bigger opportunities. He deserves it.

He already has a supporting role in a franchise movie...Black Panther, though it’s hopefully not one of questionable quality. At this point, he can afford to be a bit more choosey about his roles.

Yeah, it's Johnny English 3. His career will be absolutely fine without it.

Why does Universal what to give it a wide release in America even though the last one flopped badly compared to the first.

I suppose they're obliged to, much like Bridget Jones's Baby which was more of an OS play than a domestic play.
