Yeah reviews will be great, thinking otherwise at this point is just wishful thinking

I think 70-something on metacritic is possible, which is excellent for movies like this.

Seems like a crowdpleaser as well, if this opens big as tracking suggests we may have another +300M grosser happening

Think this is pretty easily going over $400 mil now. With Dr Strange probably finishing lower than most expected, still think this is winning summer DOM.

After early reactions I felt very confident in this winning the summer critically, but yeah it might win it commercially too

Eh I think Thor and Dominion will eek out the win, but I will say $300m+ seems very likely.

I don’t think this can beat Iron Man 2 for the 3-day simply because it’s opening over a holiday weekend. 110/135 seems the best I can hope for for the 3-4day opening. That being said, legs COULD be great, but the one-two punch of Jurassic and Lightyear are going to be tough competition.

All kidding aside, I really am starting to wonder if this is gonna get juiced up box office wise in cities/areas that have strong military/air force ties, either current or historically.  It's been over 20 years since either of our local air force bases have been open, but the sheer wattage of sales locally makes me think that the AFB tie is playing something of a role here.

Playing pretty strong in Denver too, for that matter, which might lend credence to the idea.

Could mean there's some over-performance in them darn hills that we might not catch in tracking.

From today's Drew McWeeny Newsletter, he dove into the difference between Buzz and Hype

Quote

There’s a difference between buzz and hype, and I used to be much better about paying attention to one instead of the other. Buzz is organic. Buzz is what happens when people who have seen a thing start talking to each other. Buzz grows if the thing is good. Buzz is something that fascinates me. Do you know what has fantastic buzz? Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Anyone can carpet bomb every theater in America with the same movie, and when you look at the way a piece of shit like The Secrets of Dumbledore chased Everything Everywhere All At Once off of IMAX screens even though it was performing incredibly well, only to lose those screens to the same film once it became clear no one wanted the latest Wizarding World jumble.

Weirdly, Top Gun: Maverick has shifted from hype to buzz in a way that feels organic right now. I don’t care for the first film at all, but I acknowledge the fondness people have for it. I figured it would just be an easy nostalgic cash-in, but everything I’m hearing from people who have seen the film seems genuinely excited, like they made something that not only honors the first movie but makes it feel like a better film in hindsight. I’m actually excited to see this thing now, and having just rewatched the original in 4K, I feel like if they can make me care about anything I see in the sequel, that will be borderline miraculous. Hype is what happens before people see things, and buzz is what happens when people genuinely connect with something and then can’t help but share their enthusiasm.
