In fact the top 10 the weekend the original Incredibles came out is something else too. Most of these movies feel like lost, forgotten artifacts now.

Would disagree with that. You have:

One of Pixar’s best movies

The movie that won Jamie Foxx an Oscar

Two of the most notorious horror movies of the early 2000s, including the start of a mega franchise

One of Dreamworks’ worst movies

The movie that spawned a hit TV show

A cult classic

You missed out on seeing The Grudge in theaters with an audience of teens making fun of that croaking noise, youngling.

I was 4 when it came out. That shit would have scarred me for life.

It's a fun movie to watch with friends just to make fun of how cheap the scares are (the meowing boy lololololol). I watched it again on HBO the following year with a group of friends and it was a blast.

fucking Meet the Fockers

The following year Revenge of the Sith opened to 108 and finished around 375.  This makes 620m+ seem reassuring for Incredibles 2

Sorry but nobody can convince me that the lion king is equal to the beginning of a new Star Wars trilogy with all the characters of the original trilogy in there, it’s not even comparable. Difference of opinion I guess, we will see who is right in about over a year...

TLK is gazillion times more popular in Asia than Star Wars can ever hope to be

If that isn't the most eclectic set of top 5 grossers for a year, I'm not sure what is...

2004 was also a fallen year for cinema IMO where The Matrix and LOTR trilogies had concluded with only ROTS on the horizon.  good thing the DC movies picked it up when SM3 dropped

National Treasure 3 was the biggest casualty of the Bruckheimer - Disney split... shame we never got it. Will never understand why Nic and Jerry thought we needed Sorcerer's Apprentice first since we were already at 3 years and its not like they didn't set up NT3 in the final moments of #2...

If we got it now, it would be like getting Night at the Museum 3 - way too long between and lucky to crack 100m....

Thank god the FNL movie was successful. I loved the show.

Also the lowest of the Harry Potter movies.

Stanton did an about face on Nemo so I wouldn't be surprised if he decides he either wants to do another film in that universe or a Wall-E sequel.

The only reason he did an about face was because he was embarrassed by John Carter and his stock was low. Or rather JC embarrassed him, and his fragile ego ran to Dory to save face. Not like Dory was any good either, but that's what you get when you don't use story as inspiration.

There's also Bryan Singer who really kicked off the superhero popularity with X-Men (which was then driven into the ground by another trash human, Brett Ratner). Film landscape might be very different without that first X-Men..

If you rewatch X-Men, Ratner's is the one that holds up as entertainment. The Singer films are cheesy and superficial- and that's probably why they never took off. It's surprising, but I guess audiences can tell when you try to wrap emptiness with perceived depth. In hindsight we shouldn't expect too much of Singer's films considering the man is morally bankrupt.

TS3 is the biggest victim of beginning of decade 3D craze, imo. Movie came out right when every theater was shoving 3D hard down the GA's throats and right when the GA had been burned hard back to back on Alice and Clash of the Titan's horrid post 3D. On top of that, 3D was never a good idea for family films b/c most people simply can't afford or aren't going to pay an extra $4 per ticket x 4-6 people. TS3 could have been so much bigger if there were easily available 2d options like today.

This is all hindsight and also possibly or probably untrue. The reality is that Toy Story was not as popular as we thought it was.

The others are all contributing factors. I am pretty sure TS4 will drop in admissions. Completely unnecessary.
