Safe House was near Denzel's prime. When he was benefitting from Training Day's after glow.

Safe House was eleven years after Training Day. I very much doubt the after glow of that was what drove that OW. He had plenty of hits in that period, several of which were a fair amount bigger than Training Day.

Hmm 3 MCU films in 7 months explains why Ant-man flopped. :Venom:

Not sure why Ant Man is doing so poorly (everybody will have its own theory) but 3 movies per year always seemed a bit overkill to me, especially when other studios with superhero IPs want to do the same.

Big investment though on each film.  Other films should start adding next to them on the schedule.

Safe House had the Green Lantern afterglow in the sense that after Green Lantern , the only way remaining is up.

We had three MCU films last year which were all hits so clearly audiences want them, I think Ant-Man though a palate cleanser after the juggernauts that were BP and AIW was more of an afterthought in the eyes of audiences

It's pretty ironic to me that "Skyscraper" under-performance is on the same weekend as the 30th Anniversary of "Die Hard".   "Die Hard" made 83 Domestic in 1988 and adjust to 185.   Today is the Anniversary  7/15/88-7/15/18.

Marvel Studios will make 3.9 billion instead of 4 billion this year.

"Oh no. What a disaster. Change course!"

Jumanji and Rampage were pretty backloaded with the uneven Thursday to Friday jumps for big event action pics.  I think the mediocre numbers are from the movie itself when comparing with the openings of Tomb Raider, Maze Runner and Pacific Rim 2.  Having Dwayne Johnson in the film I think is just made the movie what it is.  The concept/vision is what sells these action movies and the Rampage concept vs Skyscraper concept vs Mission Impossible concept did not seem to favor Skyscraper this time around.  If it was made 5 years from now, or 25 years ago, maybe it would be written differently.  One word action titles have always had their own world and the large budget in Skyscraper shows the confidence they have in these pictures despite so many flops.

Skyscraper might be like taking John Wick and stuffing it with non-action scenarios.  If Skyscraper played like Die Hard, it would be more like John Wick.  Instead, maybe the scenarios are spread out more like Stealth and Air Force One.
