Academy Awards adding a "Best Popular Film" category. Good or bad idea? Academy walks it back, won't be presented this year

Recommended Posts

What does this explanation even mean?  Does it mean popular films also need to all be released in Nov/December in order to be remembered for the Academy and studios will adjust their schedules forthwith.

Quote

The Academy recognized that implementing any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released,” said AMPAS on Thursday of the course change for the 91st Oscars, set for February 24, 2019. (Read the full statement below.)

They clearly didn't know. They simply thought it was an easy way to award Black Panther until Crazy Rich Asians, A Star is Born, etc., emerged as threats.

Hottake: The best vfx nod seems to cover the most popular films a lot of the times (there are exceptions like Ex Machina)

Usually whatever's nominated for Best Picture in that category wins there. Ex Machina's win likely came due there being three Best Picture nominees plus a Star Wars movie splitting the votes.

Nah, nothing was ever a threat. People made them up because it's boring to know the winner so early. It's like when they were imagining that Woody Allen scandal would hurt Blanchett and prop Adams or another scenario where obvious winner was somehow upset cause convoluted reasons. It was BOP's to lose no matter what.

The noms yes - the wins no - unless they really really can't avoid it.

Ex Machina was the only small movie at the box office in the last 20 year's to win no ?

Matrix,

Gladiator

3 lords of the rings

Spider man 2

King King

Pirates

Golden Compass

Benjamin button

Avatar

Inception

hugo (185m)

Life of Pi

Gravity

Interstellar

Ex Machina

Jungle Book

Blade runner

Outside Ex Machina, Hugo is the only movie to go below 250m at the box office, most are above 500m. With Button 330m, Runner 256m, Hugo 185m and Ex machina the only below 500m winner.

really excited for the trailer for some random VOD movie that gets 20 million views because there's cleavage in the thumbnail to get nominated.

Maybe a Reaction video to Avengers 4 special edition unboxing or Dwayne Johnson daily training on the set of Red Notice could win.

It's really dumb that they're going to have categories awarded at the ceremony but won't air them live. Just cut back on ads ffs.

I think these will be the categories cut in order of likelihood:

Documentary Short Subject

Live Action Short Film

Animated Short Film

Makeup and Hairstyling

Sound Editing

Sound Mixing

Foreign Film

Documentary

I doubt the last two get cut, but I really don't see them dropping Costumes, Production Design, or Editing so 🤷‍♂️

It sucks that they're still going forward with the "categories won by not famous people will take place off air" plan though (and are gonna be "rotating" them lol just for that rare occasion when somebody famous does win ala Kobe Bryant). And with 6-8 categories too. We all know they're just gonna fill up that time with more unfunny host antics and unnecessary montages and tributes no one cares about.
