That seems like an odd leap to make given that Freaky was an original property without a major box office draw while the box office in general was in a massive pandemic induced lull. Halloween is a decades old franchise with a built in audience and it's namesake holiday is coming up fast. While the box office isn't normal, a lot of people will come out now for something they want to see and that wasn't true last fall.

I think he's afraid of the word of mouth for this one, which doesn't seem like it will be positive.

All horror sequels with mediocre reviews have performed well in the pandemic recently. ESCR2, DB2, Purge. So why would Halloween change that? Because reviews are so so? People want to watch horror on the big screen for the communal experience.
