Maybe just didn't click with audiences on test screenings, because i just read an Interview with Wan saying that this movie doesn't have jump scares, doesn't have much in common with his other "horror movies", have a hard to define genre, and confirm his inspirations on De Palma and Argento.

Even the trailer had jump scares and common horror movie stuff, I didn't notice anything De Palma or Argento, I call this marketing bs.

Saw (2004) got a C+ and it went on to be a billion dollar grossing franchise, so who cares what the Cinemascore is? Lol

When did I say otherwise? I loved mother! which is an F cinemascore. Only curious about audience reception after those notorious test screenings. And after receiving two Fs so suddenly last year, I feel like we’re due again

I just think we only usually hear about test screenings when the reaction is negative. I guess negativity garners more clicks and likes unfortunately.

I have a hard time believing this cost $80M.

Where you get this from?

$60 million, not $80 million. Though even I'm having difficulty remembering where I heard that.

There's a big one-take action scene in a police station that surely wasn't cheap, and the killer's lair is giant from a production design standpoint (it's the bit in the trailer with the giant fan). I could believe this cost $50-60M.

Pure speculation.

It annoys me how WB is treating Wan here. Dude delivered their biggest superhero hit since TDK and created their most successful franchise of the last decade, but they're dumping this with no fanfare. What is this studio doing?

They expect bad reviews. Dumping it is more important than their ties to him.

I wonder if Wan ditches them after Aquaman 2. He already did furious 7 with Universal. He finished his franchise work and got his blank check, he is more than capable of taking his talents elsewhere

I've never met James but I know a number of people in Wan's social circle and I've heard he's worried about MALIGNANT's reception. Burying the movie a little bit so that it doesn't negatively affect future movies might be his call.

He said in a interview that he was the one asking WB to keep this movie very secretive and showing very little, so yeah maybe is his idea to avoid negative impact on his career because he know it's bad.

Or he anxious because it's a passion project and a different movie for him and he worried if people will reject something he loved. In both ways, it could explain his wish of keep this low profile.
