is Fantastic Beasts expected to be the top grossing film of the year here?

Doubt it. If it beats Bridget Jones' £48m (Unlikely, but not impossible), Rogue One will probably top it. I'm expecting £55-60m for that.

Yeah, I'm expecting somewhere between £10-12m for FB, similar ranges to the last 3 Hunger Games. New Moon also opened to £11.7m. A result like this wouldn't surprise me. Will be very interesting to see where it lands, given the fact it's part of the Potter universe.

GoF for comparison opened to £14.9m back in 2005, a result that FB will almost certainly not aheive. DH1 opened to £18.3m. Potter was just a monster at the UK BO.

Still keeping my hopes for at least £15m on OW. If FB somehow manages a 115-120m in the US and matches Potter's total, I'd be disappointed if it lost so much ground in the UK (in local currency ofc).

You have to understand though that, while Potter was huge in the US, it wasn't a monster in the same way that it was in the UK. 5 of the 8 Potter films here are in the top 25 biggest films of all time.

Only one Potter (DH2) is in the top 25 in the US, at exactly number 25, so it won't be there for much longer. So for Fantastic Beasts to open to a similar number to Potter in the US than in the UK is a much smaller challenge, by comparison.

A £15m opening just isn't realistic at all. Only 2 Potters (The last two) and a few other films (Mainly Bond) have had a 3-day over £15m. It won't happen for FB, nothing is indicating that, so no one should expect it.

An £11m opening would be a great result, and nothing to be disappointed in. This isn't Harry Potter, but it's still going to be very popular. Just not on that level.

Both Doctor Strange (£19.6m so far) and Trolls (£19.3m) are poised to pass £20m, when they will become the 14th and 15th films this year to do so, joining The Revenant, Deadpool, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zootropolis, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, The Secret Life of Pets, The BFG, Finding Dory, Jason Bourne, Suicide Squad, Bridget Jones’s Baby and The Girl on the Train. In 2015, 15 films took £20m-plus at the box office. This year, there will certainly be more: Fantastic Beasts and Rogue One will do so, for sure, while Disney Animation and Sony will be pinning their hopes on Moana and Passengers.

Very impressive. 2016 is definitely a year of a lot of big hits, without a 'monster' hit, bar perhaps Rogue One which should top £50m, and I guess Bridget Jones which in its own right was a huge hit. Stark contrast to last year when we had the 1st and 3rd, and 10th biggest film of all time. However, takings so far are up on 2015, but may fall away with a smaller November and December than last year. We'll see.

Top 3 day openings: (any days)

1. Star Wars 7 - £25.4m (Thu-Sat)

2. Deathly Hallows 2 - £23.8m

3. Skyfall - £20.2m

4. Spectre - £20m

5. Deathly Hallows 1 - £18.3m

6. Jurassic World - £16.8m

Top Fri-Sun openings:

From list above everything is Fri-Sun except SW

Star Wars 7 - £24.3m

After Jurassic World:

7. Breaking Dawn 2 - £15.9m
8. Quantum of Solace - £15.8m

9. Goblet of Fire - £14.9m

10. Batman Vs Superman - £14.6m

13. Breaking Dawn 1 - £13.9m

14. Fifty Shades - £13.6m

15. Order of the Phoenix - £13m

I might be missing a couple, but it's really difficult to get proper data for UK openings before about 2010, especially since a lot of openings had previews lumped on which values are unknown.

Top openings including previews:

1. Spectre - £41.3m (Mon-Sun)

2. Star Wars 7 - £34m (Thu-Sun)

3. Prisoner of Azkaban - £23.9m (Mon-Sun)

4. Deathly Hallows 2 - £23.8m

14. Shrek 2 - £16.1m (Don't Know specific days)

15. Avengers - £15.8m (Thu-Sun)

16. Return of the King - £15m (Wed-Sun)

I think that's all of them, a few of the older films I couldn't find what day they were released on.

Biggest single days:

Biggest opening day and single day (Thursday): Star Wars 7 - £9.7m (Including £2.4m midnight, also a record)

Friday: Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Over £9m (Exact figure unknown)

Saturday: Star Wars 7 - £8.7m

Sunday: Star Wars 7 - £8.6m

Monday: Star Wars 7 - £5.8m

Tuesday: Spectre - £6.3m

Wednesday: Spectre - £6m

Milestones and other records:

Fastest to reach £50m: Star Wars 7 (6 days)

Fastest to reach £80m: Star Wars 7 (13 days)

Fastest to reach £100m: Star Wars 7 (20 days)

Biggest 7-day gross: Star Wars 7 - £55.8m

Highest grossing IMAX film: Star Wars 7 - £8.2m

Widest release of all time: Star Wars 7 - 670 theatres

Biggest advance sales: Star Wars 7 - £2m

Highest grossing film of all time: Star Wars 7 - £119.4m

2nd biggest weekend: Skyfall - £16.1m

As you can see, SW7 had a very impressive run at the UK BO.

I think it's better to have a lot of big hits rather than one monster hit as it benefits attendance. The winners this year are Disney, Universal and WB but eOne have done exceptionally well beating Paramount and Sony with the success of The BFG and The Girl on the Train. We've seen a real rise of Studiocanal and eOne in the last few years.

It'll be interesting to see what the big hitters are next year, Star Wars Episode VIII will likely be the number 1 film but I could see Guardians 2, Beauty and the Beast, Wonder Woman and Justice League being very successful and Paddington 2 is also next year along with Despicable Me 3. My dark horse big hit is Dunkirk even though it's opening in July against the likes of Planet of the Apes and Spider-Man,

Beauty and the Beast could easily have a run that matches or even exceeds The Jungle Book here, especially with Emma Watson at the helm. £50m contender for sure.

SW8 should easily win the year though, probably over £75m.

Lots of big potential next year, Dunkirk will definitely be one to watch.

BFI IMAX dominates again but Vue Westfield London to have 2 and 3 is impressive, Vue Westfield SC also has two entries. Surprising Cineworld LS' top entry wasn't Doctor Strange but I guess it's been out a while.
