filmlover
The combo of being easily available to watch at home via a subscription and the multiple bad headlines it has endured this past week (the shockingly low box office numbers, the colorism controversy) pretty much killed In the Heights. Just goes to show that you can't always predict what will connect and what won't until the movie is actually out there.

The movie might just have been too long as well for people to give it a chance in theaters. It really hits the wall when the focus moves away from the main plot for a pretty unnecessary plot and song about 2 hours in. The movie really needed to start wrapping up at that point. It's decent enough, but without HBO Max, I don't think I would have watched it at all
filmlover
$3.1M for Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, $2.8M for A Quiet Place. ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard 2’ Box Office: Action-Comedy Targets ‘Quiet Place’ – The Hollywood Reporter
Cmasterclay
I would have predicted a $15 million OW for Hitman's Bodyguard 2 for the three day weekend in a pre-pandemic world, so honestly the 5 day is right in line with that expectation. Who asked for this? Sad for In The Heights and sad as a lifelong progressive to see my own movement eating their own, eating a genuinely progressive film that should be seen, with a made up controversy. Sad sad sad. 3
filmlover
A Quiet Place will probably end up #1 again. Free Guy should have been the delayed-from-2020 Ryan Reynolds movie to take over the Father's Day weekend spot (if one had to) once Luca's theatrical release was called off, even if it meant getting hit by F9 the following weekend. Father's Day tends to be a family day and it's rated PG-13 (as opposed to the R-rated Hitman's) so pretty sure it would've certainly fared slightly better under the circumstances. Blankments
Quote In what I’d argue qualifies as a cruel joke, Walt Disney’s Luca has the year’s biggest per-theater average and the largest per-theater average for any theatrical release since Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems earned $537,242 in five theaters in December of 2019. Likewise, Pixar’s latest flick, about two young sea creatures who form a friendship while hiding out in an Italian fishing village, will only play theatrically at the El Capitan for one week. It’s a Disney+ exclusive in North America and all other participating markets. We’ll get any relevant overseas grosses for Luca tomorrow, but the film earned around $26,000 on Friday for a likely $80,000 “weekend gross.” Even then, the per-theater-average is (understandably, considering the Disney+ variable) well below Disney’s prior glories. https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2021/06/19/friday-box-office-hitmans-wifes-bodyguard-ryan-reynolds-samuel-l-jackson-salma-hayek-luca-pixar-disney/?sh=1c361484f57b

It's only playing there for a week so it can qualify for the Oscars.

Frozen did huge when it was just at El Capitan which should have been a sign.
