Can’t do a full comp post but I ran my numbers and The Black Phone comped against my other R rated horror films in the $18-21M range this weekend. I have zero good comps for Elvis but it hit $43M against The Lost City, for whatever that’s worth.

SLC Cinemark Sugarhouse Preview Night update for Elvis and Black Phone, 4:15 MST.

Elvis

Total tix sold 95/278 34.2%

109% of Ghostbusters ($4.9)

114% of Uncharted ($4.2)

144% of Lost City ($4.68)

26% of Dominion ($4.68)

Looking solid for Elvis. I'm going with a $3.8 preview night as this theater may skew a bit older than most of the Salt Lake Valley, but I'm also expecting tons of walk ups over the weekend, so let's say 3.8/43.5.

Black Phone is doing alright, 30/144 (20.8%). Halloween Kills comp is $1.62, Morbius, $2.48. Don't have any particular feel for this one, but anecdotally the awareness level here seems pretty high.

Some of you may be concerned, but also note that Elvis was likely to underindex due to demographi issues. I think it should still get into the 3M range.

Another theater just opened in the Raleigh area. Not planning on tracking it (mainly because each showtime has FIVE reserved areas I'd have to check!), but just noting that it may affect comps.  The article states July 1st opening, but there are showtimes with sales for today.

Cary coming in for the win

Elvis had decent walk-ups tonight at Cinemark. I think it should still overperform.. which it needs to do because tons of walkouts at my showing lol

I'm assuming those walkouts was when they learned Stitch wouldn't show up.

It's the Baziest movie Baz ever Bazzed. Its like if Romeo and Juliet's prologue was 160 minutes long. I think basic audiences who made Bohemian Rhapsody a hit and expecting a traditional Elvis biopic... well, let's just say they're likely not expecting Doja Cat on the soundtrack

I wouldn't necessarily defend it as a good movie. The third act is a drag, framing the movie around Hanks is both vague and contradictory, and the film offers no meaningful insight/depth into Elvis. It's a very shapeless and shallow script. But as a visual experience and showcase for Elvis the performer, it's unmatched. The sound is loud, full of plenty of giddy editing techniques such as split screens, it's breathlessly paced for the first 2/3, and Butler truly throws himself into the role, even if it gives him nothing to play other than a showman

If you like Baz (Moulin, Romeo and Juliet, and Gatsby especially), you'll like this
