The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Recommended Posts

Going to get back of the swing of things soon-looking at films to start covering, see whats coming up (and more importantly what I can actually FIND on Cineplex lol). Wanted to start Missing, but that's right now showing only like 5 theatres total throughout Canada for advanced sales right now. Hoping tomorrow Wed "inventory drop day" at least starts putting more theatres up for presales.

I can answer my question - the presales for this movie at my 2 locals are bonkers...this is obviously winning the "highest grossing of the Indian movies" this weekend.  The local I listed that is giving this 1.5 screens for the weekend, has given this 3 equivalent evening screens for Thursday and they have enormous presales as of today (at least for foreign films - I mean, it's not an MCU or anything...but still)...

The only likely to win is Veer Simha Reddy.

Waltair Veerya is starring father of Ram Charan (Ram from RRR)

VSR is starring uncle of NTR jr. (Bheem from RRR)

2nd Cinemark also decided this would be the week Avatar would take some screen cuts...down to 2 screens at the 2nd, while it also booked all 4 Indian films and held over 2 (so there are now almost as many Indian movies being shown as Hollywood ones).

Megan is keeping 2 screens, House Party and Plane both open with 1 (and this had Otto last week, which stays with 1), Black Panther somehow stays with Puss.

All the other Xmas openers and Dec openers are gone, so legs for IWDWS and Babylon are gonna continue to fall off...

Per the show count list @katnisscinnaplex put out on Friday, both Whitney and Babylon fell below $100/show for this past weekend, a very weak total

With only 6 titles reaching over $170/show (including Whale and Otto, which are still limited) release, we're likely going to see a lot of show and TC cuts below BPWF, because it's not like switching out for something else can really do all that much worse [For the holiday weekend, probably see a lot of split screens or even single daily shows, before they drop completely the following weekend]

It's got a TMobile $5 ticket deal (not $5 off, so it's a great city theater deal, where prices tend to be sky high), so the presale boost is likely a lot of folks deciding $5 for a nighttime movie is a good date price...

I THINK my boys and I may be joining this group, but we're still deciding about Friday (teen girl wants to take a date to Puss, so it's easy to drive them and see a different movie cheap vs dropping off, driving home, and coming back in an hour, but we'll see if the date fall through)...
