The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

The biggest travesty of all is Disney and Turning Red.  Such a stupid and short sighted decision by people that don't understand simple economics and revenue streams.

Turning Red will gain Disney+ nearly zero new subscribers.  It will retain zero subscribers.  Anyone and everyone that is going to watch Turning Red already subscribes.

What it did cost them is potentially $200m domestic and maybe $500m world wide at the box office.  It also fucked theater owners out of hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales and food/beverage sales.  All so the hard work of Pixar can live on some idiots 42 inch tv in bumfuck Ohio.

Between this, the horrible release strategy of Raya and the surprisingly lack of marketing for Encanto, is shocking the lack of confidence Disney is having with their animated features.

To be fair, this situation has been hardly unique to Disney when animated titles have been getting (turning) redheaded stepchild treatment across all studios going all the way back to the start of the pandemic. Universal made Trolls 2 a PVOD exclusive title that bypassed theaters and Boss Baby 2 a day-and-date Peacock premiere, WB sent Scoob! to PVOD, Sony sold off their animated titles (The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Vivo) to Netflix, and Paramount made their cartoons either a day-and-date with Paramount+ (Paw Patrol) or a P+ exclusive (Rumble).

It's more that Disney (and all studios, don't think I'm singling them out) don't care about theaters anymore. They'd rather they die and pocket all the money for themselves, even if that means losing a revenue source in the process. Welcome to the future baby.

EDIT: The Paramount Decrees being no more also means this could all be a scheme for Disney/Warner to buy up theater chains. AMC's got crypto bros and Reddit meme stocks on their side, but it will only go so far.

They don't have lack of confidence, they just think is doing better on D+, and it's sad saying that but data points to that.

Soul break the record of most watched movie on it's debut in 2020 and Luca was simply the biggest movie of 2021 on Nielsen. Both massive on social media as well. Even Onward which was one of the movies that suffers the most with pandemic ended up being huge on D+.

Encanto numbers just came out yesterday, 2.3 billion minutes in it's first 3 days, close to a record, the soundtrack is simply massive, the album is coming to 3 weeks at #1 and Bruno song it's #2 on Billboard, with a chance of going #1 (first time since Aladdin).

Hard to tell if it's bringing new subscribers (some Pixar staff said it is actually), but streaming is not only about getting new people but keeping the people already subscribed, and at bare minimim their animations is helping them to keep their 120M consumers.

I hate the fact they keep doing that, i found very disrespectful (especially with Pixar), but they're not treating as nothing, they're just focused in other ways of distribution, and so far all of them are very succesful, just not on theaters because like @Eric Rileysaid, seems like they don't care anymore.

Should the interest score for UNCHARTED be higher?

Quote

The good news is that awareness has been on the rise. Back on January 1st, awareness was at 38%. Today it’s at 44%. That’s good enough to place it 12th among all the films currently being tracked by The Quorum

While awareness has been steadily climbing, interest has been flat. Actually, the film’s interest score has slipped from 5.4 at the beginning of the year to 5.3 today. That places it in 27th place among all titles.
