This weekend will be particularly quiet with Lionsgate’s action-thriller “Fall” and A24’s satirical slasher “Bodies Bodies Bodies” as the only new nationwide releases. According to tracking estimates, “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” which is expanding to 1,200 locations, is aiming for $2 million to $3 million in domestic ticket sales. Meanwhile “Fall,” which is debuting in 1,548 North American venues, is estimated to bring in $1 million to $2 million between Friday and Sunday.

 

With those single-digit projections, last weekend’s champion “Bullet Train” is expected to repeat No. 1 at the domestic box office. The blood-soaked Sony Pictures pic, starring Brad Pitt as a hitman nicknamed Ladybug, opened to $30.1 million and looks to add $13 million to $15 million in its sophomore outing. The R-rated “Bullet Train” cost $90 million to produce, so it needs to sustain momentum in the coming weeks to justify its hefty price tag — and to convince studios to keep investing in original movies.

Out of curiosity I checked all the theaters in NYC, and it looks like NONE of them have even a single IMAX screening for Top Gun this weekend (albeit a decent amount of other PLF formats). You'd think that's the first place they would have put screenings...

Big issue is they already committed to the E.T. re-release. Paramount really should have waited for their big PLF expansion on August 26. Nothing's playing on IMAX that weekend, the weekend's going to be even deader, etc.

Well, this is fun.  Now the app is showing more theaters than the website is.  Theaters that I normally track have shows listed for Mack & Rita today on the the app but not on Fandango's website.  (Regal North Hills and Cinemark Raleigh Grande).  I confirmed on both corporate sites that they do have shows today.  I am starting to not trust Fandango

For non-IMAX PLFs sure, but then you run into headache of trying to resecure the content - as it’s likely been deleted since it’s last show (given limited space and how many PLF resales have occurred in the interim) - for a title that probably doesn’t get a full PLF schedule (Dragonball probably does well enough to keep at least some shows in week 2) and will be out on digital release too, limiting returns  

 

This is why Paramount should have set a date and secured/advertised an August PLF/IMAX rerelease in advance (see Dune), before it’s digital release date, probably for this weekend, even if it had to share with ET and possibly BT. Being willing to take whatever leftover shows theaters were willing to give it limits potential, even if demand is still there

Obviously a slowed down time and people taking their time off (including myself where some people have chosen to create events that I find myself going to). Beast is also getting plenty of PLF screens next weekend too (mostly at locations with more than one giant screen).
