BoxOfficeFangrl
Surprised EEAAO missed the shortlists for Visual Effects and Makeup/Hairstyling. OTOH, it's still alive in Score and Original Song (it had a song? ok). A mixed bag for its above the line odds. Blonde, again. Ana is showing up more among non-American groups... LOLOLOL at All Too Well missing the cut here after all that campaigning. Better luck with the feature film!
CoolioD1
the batman not being in the top 15 for best score is crazy! that's still my favorite score of the year even if i didn't love the film. 3

titanic2187
Given the fact that A2 falling below the expectation in term of BO, I would say A2 momentum in the Oscar race would drop a fair bit.

Right now, EEAAO, Fabelmans, Inisherin, Maverick, Avatar, Elvis and Women Talking are assured BP nominees. Tàr and Babylon are likely in contention as well. Last spot should be for All quiet in the western front (Foreign+war). Outside of this 10, I can only see chances for Triangle of Sadness, The Whale, Glass Onion and Woman King. stripe
I miss the times with only 5 BP nominees. What would happen this year with this short list? Inisherin, Maverick, Fabelmans and EEAAO all look like they are in. But 5th? What a bloodbath between Women Talking, Elvis, Avatar, Babylon and Tàr! Babylon is clinging for dear life at the notion a Best Picture nomination at this point with all the hurdles it has (mixed reviews, disastrous box office, weak audience scores from those who are seeing it). Women Talking doing worse in limited release than even Spoiler Alert (indicating no one cares to check it out) is pretty concerning too. Women Talking doesn't need BO to be in the conversation and sneak in. While Babylon is divisive, it has a strong group of supporters. I agree though that both would have less chances than Avatar and Tàr if there were only 5 BP noms. My predictions then would be: Maverick Inisherin EEAAO Fabelmans Avatar Alt. Elvis
stripe
Curious fact: If Avatar and Maverick are nommed, we would look at the second highest BP line up cumulative gross ever since expanded field. 2009 BP line up grossed 1.7b (170M average) 2022 BP line up gross could be around 1.6b (160M average). Other years with notable averages. 2010: 1.35b (135M average) 2012: 1b (with 9 films, 111M average) 2013: 813M with 9 films (90M average) 2015: 810M with 8 films (101M average) 2018: 1.347b with 8 films (168M average). One streaming movie. 2019: 949M with 9 films (105M average). Two streaming movies.
WrathOfHan
I view the race right now as: Frontrunners: 1. Everything Everywhere All at Once 2. The Banshees of Inisherin 3. The Fabelmans Safe: 4. TÁR 5. Top Gun: Maverick 6. Avatar: The Way of Water 7. Elvis 8. Women Talking Fighting for the Last Two Spots: 9. Babylon 10. Aftersun 11. All Quiet on the Western Front 12. The Woman King 13. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 14. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery 15. Living Some precedents are going to be broken this year, just like CODA threw so many "rules" out the window last year. I think Picture is ultimately between EEAAO and Banshees, leaning towards the former for now. Fabelmans isn't dead but has lost too much buzz by now. I can maybe see TÁR, Top Gun, or Avatar pulling preferential ballot shenanigans but don't see them being viable with the specific hurdles each film has to overcome across the Academy (TÁR is too arthouse for the old guard+could miss below the line nominations, Top Gun might not get anything above the line, Avatar won't have acting and likely screenplay) Women Talking's had a pretty disastrous December between the box office and muted precursor recognition, but the last two spots being wildcards are keeping it safe until proven otherwise. If it was last year, I don't think it would've gotten into Picture. Elvis is above it at this point and will almost certainly garner more nominations. As for the last two spots, Aftersun feels somewhat underestimated to me. If BAFTA goes crazy for it, watch out. I haven't seen Babylon yet, but even with the mixed reception and flopping, it will still pull 4-7 below the line noms before it even hits any acting categories, boosting the case for a Picture nomination. All Quiet got a big boost from the shortlists and is clearly the international film that could breakthrough into Picture (sorry RRR). Black Panther also had a great shortlist showing, but with two sequels already ahead of it for Picture, I don't think it makes the lineup. Woman King's poor shortlist performance doesn't bode well elsewhere; it probably needs all three of Actress, Costume Design, and Score to make Picture. Glass Onion could benefit from being well-liked but seems to be fading with less precursor recognition than Knives Out. Living remains a usual SPC spoiler.

Ezen Baklattan
Jeez, Women Talking can't catch a break. And to think I was predicting it as a potential WINNER back in January. I'll stick with it for now, but that and Babylon are definitely no higher than #8-9. Shortlists can be taken too far (House of Gucci DOMINATED in BAFTA shortlists last year, after all), but with 10 slots instead of 15, it does make the films there stronger. cookie
Avatar getting dissed by the BAFTAs is... interesting. Still think it's locked for a BP nom, but I'm starting to think Top Gun could upset it in some of the more blockbuster-friendly categories (besides VFX, Avatar's got that covered). Thinking if something were to lose out to either Glass Onion or Aftersun it would be either Babylon or Women Talking.
