so basically what you’re saying it would make a lot of people angry and create maximum Internet drama?

For those saying TG2 has a big chance of winning....Jeff Sneider made a good point. Avatar2 will surely get nominated and it will steal votes from TG2 from those who vote for blockbuster, so in the end The Fabelmans will win.

Everything Everywhere is looking to be Top Gun’s competition, not The Fabelmans.

This is looking like an increasingly thin year in which most of the nominees for Best Picture seem destined to be “filler nominees” at best. Babylon feels like it’s on life support at this point after missing both NBR and AFI.

I'd considered that, but wth the ranked choice voting, TGM and Avatar 2 could both have a lot of high placements on ballots from lovers of spectacle. OTOH,  you'll probably have some Maverick fans who enjoy it as old-fashioned moviemaking and feel The Way of Water is too VFX heavy, and will rank it much lower.

But voters are idiosyncratic, last year you had the Anonymous Oscar Ballots with CODA and Nightmare Alley in their Top 3, you can only predict so much about how the race will go.

There have been some wildly unexpected results in recent years, though, but it feels like people discount them as flukes and go back to predicting the same old things to happen.

Avatar should still get nominated but definitely not winning

My understanding is that if enough people love a film it can pull out a win. That is why films that end in low 70's in RT can still get in nomination and win even against much better scores. Enough people gushing about it that it could be in with a small chance. But yeah unlikely. Maybe Avatar 4 which is hinted at having the strongest story.

The fact that Avatar 2 could be nommed is already an incredible achievement. Only three second instalments have been nommed for BP: The Bells of St Mary, The Godfather Part II and The Two Towers.

Interestingly, this year we might see two sequels nommed: TGM and Avatar.
