I don't think that matters all that much anymore. It's just about the right movie and moment now. Narrative and prestige can only take you so far sometimes

Aronofsky has been on Oscar radar before while Safdies haven't. He directed Black Swan and The Wrestler.

mother was incredibly divisive and a horror film. And why did anyone predict Noah when it had a March release? Aronfsky has still proven to be a big director who gets showy performances. Whale is a story about a dad reconnecting with his father. I wouldn’t anticipate it being as polarizing as the last two films. And that can be enough to throw Fraser in the mix as a contender.

The Whale sounds like Aronofsky returning to The Wrestler territory given that movie was also the indie follow up to a studio dud. Fraser has a very good comeback narrative that could very well lead to his first nomination.

Also Michelle Yeoh NEEDS to get that Oscar. If Stone, JLaw and Bullock snagged it with those performances, Yeoh deserves it 100 times

Empire of Light sounds very mediocre from what I gather. Real messy and soapy. Although it's Searchlight bait, I'm thinking it'll miss the mark. Also hearing some inconsistent word about She Said, kinda confirming what I assumed about it.
