Weekend Thread (6/3-5) | Top Gun 2 drops 29% for 90M. The smallest second weekend drop ever for a 100M+ opener!

Man, looking through the archived threads here, some of the 2013/15 threads had over 50 pages for a single weekday. Now we have one of the most historic holds for a blockbuster ever recorded still struggling to cross 40 pages for the entire weekend.

This site hasn't recovered from Covid yet, maybe there will be a film that comes out, maybe this year perhaps december, that changes that and a new influx of fans of the box office come in.

I'm not sure what that will be though

Can anyone explain this strange thing? I just realised MoM running cume is still falling behind CW (388m vs 389m) although MoM has bigger opening and better hold than CW for 3 consecutive weekends (from week 3 to week 5)

The power of 2nd weekend, DS2 is still making up the loss as the result of the pot 2nd weekend hold.

this is something fascinating about the 2nd week, if you drop big %, the actual raw box office numbers is actually very sizeable. You can “lose” 120m if you drop 65% in 2nd week, but you will only “lose” like 30m? If that 65% hit took place in, let’s say week 4 or 5.

It was convoluted, disjointed, too long and, again for a Marvel film, it was much ado about nothing. Nothing of consequnce happened: in the multiverse setting, NOTHING is of consequence. Every death or serious development has no weight because you might live or get what  you want in another universe. Completely forgettable.

Yeah. I get the mixed the word of mouth what's in bold applies to most blockbusters most definitely including Top Gun 2 though. Things of consequence create divisive opinions. They're risky. Could've made some real choices but avoids them all wholesale. Literally nothing of consequence save the one thing in TGM which is telegraphed as fuck and really a cheap trick for audience sympathy happens in it. Nothing. Nothing at all. Still a great movie though. Word of mouth is mixed for Strange other reasons. So, yeah, not a big deal. The weirdness and lack of cameos and uneven movie are what hurt it. Know what else nothing of consequence happens in that had nice legs? The new Batman. Nothing of consequence. Nothing. Nothing at all.

Par estimates -30% SUN hold.

Source? Or are we assuming that the $35.9M Saturday estimate is correct? (I like EC/Charlie and what they do for us but even they can be off by $1M).

Sunday AM writethru final after Saturday AM Update: Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick held throughout the week, and it’s holding at a brilliant steady in weekend 2. The sequel’s -32% ease is the best for a wide release that’s opened to $100M+, ahead of the -40% posted by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December 2015 as well as 2004’s Shrek 2  (-33%).

Top Gun 2 clocked $86M, which will put it at $291.6M EOD today; easily the best Tom Cruise has ever seen at the domestic box office. The Joseph Kosinski-directed movie cashed in a second Friday at $25M, $5M ahead of where we saw it on Friday afternoon.

EntTelligence reports 6.5M moviegoers came out to see Top Gun 2 in its second weekend, taking its running admissions count to north of 22M. The average ticket price for the movie has dipped from $12.68 to $12.53. Premium large format ticket sales continue to drive per EntTelligence with a 32% share, the same as last weekend. Imax reports that their auditoriums eased 21% in weekend 2, repping close to 13% of weekend 2 ticket sales or $11M for a near $40M take. Next weekend all Imax screens cede to Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion. On Saturday, EntTelligence reports that 51% came out to see the movie before 7PM.

The sequel is playing broadly: In weekend 2 PostTrak exits, Top Gun 2 is seeing 38% over 45, with the 25-34 crowd delivering the best attendance on Friday at 24%, followed by 45-54 at 20%. Still a marvelous audience response here at five stars and a 75% definite recommend. Men over 25 were big over the weekend at 43% (95% grade), then women over 25 at 38% (93% grade), with men under 25 at 11% (95%) and women under 25 at 8% (82% grade). Paramount reports that the under 35 demo gained 3% in weekend 2 from weekend 1, now standing at 49%.

Assuming the movie make $47m next week, TGM will be at around 385m by the end of 3rd weekend. That is 3X legs already with more holidays to come such as Independence Day and father day where both holidays are perfect day to see TGM.

35.8M are estimate by Paramount

25.2M (-30%) Sunday hold

Seriously underestimated by Paramount. I'm thinking closer to 20% drop so increase of about 3.5M in estimate.

$100M IMAX gross very easy.

How many movies made that much?

I don’t think 100m is easy since JWD will be taking over all ImAX screens next weekend. That will be like 95% drop next weekend for TGM imax box office
