Reposting this here b/c it is incredible...all Deadline info - Minions had almost no adults...has their ever been a "kid" skew this wild on any movie ever put out, especially at these huge box office numbers?

"However, Rise of Gru did attract a massive under-25 demographic at 89%. Even more impressive is how Universal made a brand that was unhip, hip again for the 13-17 crowd, who showed up at 34%. Alas, the power of TikTok. Scroll down for more detail."

https://deadline.com/2022/07/minions-rise-of-gru-box-office-1235055270/

Compared to Lightyear which opened 60% less...and had almost no kids...only 46% below 25...and at way lower numbers b/c it opened so much lower...

"Of those who turned out for Lightyear, 52% were men, 48% females. Some 61% of those who bought tickets were between 18-34. Men over 25 were dominant at 30%, giving the film its best grade of 87% positive. Females under 25 at 24% also gave it 87%. Females over 25 repped 24% of the audience and graded the Pixar film with an 85%. Men under 25 at 23% gave the film a 79% grade."

I just want to say something more about this...

These numbers show the movie wasn't watched by "families" at least in the traditional sense.  I mean, an 11% turnout for 25+ includes all the possible parents and the non-parental adults.  So, even if ALL those adults brought 2 kids, you're talking a 33% family turnout and a 67% teen/young adult one (13-25)...and it's unlikely every 25+ was a parent, so this movie doesn't prove families are back, b/c they are still not in their 2019 way, at least for OW, but it does prove that you don't need them if you can drive an overwhelming response from the 13-25s.

People used to say Pixar always succeeded b/c they pulled so strongly with 25+...well, Illumination might start to be in that same "never miss" stratosphere if they can pull 13-25 every movie like they did for this one...

 disagree strongly on both points.

No one should be throwing stuff around and deliberately trying to ruin the film for other people. Remember they’re not being genuine with their reactions, it’s all a “bit” for attention and TikTok.

Being 52-54 as you said, they could’ve lost time with already vulnerable parents and would have jobs/house/family to worry about. These guys just played Fortnite more.

Kids had it worse. As a kid you go out to avoid being with parents, they had 2 years where this wasn't possible. As an adult, being told to stay in isn't much different to normal life. Going out and socialising with friends is far more important to kids than it is for adults who have been there and done that. Being a teenager are some of the best years of your life, wasting 2 years of it is depressing. No-one thinks the 50's are the best years, they're the years of staying in.

Pixar went woke and went broke. Illumination didn't. Putting a gay kiss in a kids movie is one thing but putting it in then telling everyone about it shows a complete lack understanding when it comes to knowing ones audience. After 2 years of lockdowns, people wanted to pay for escapism, they didn't want preaching to. The past year has seen movies that call themselves woke massively under-performing. Eternals was MCU's biggest flop, MOM bait and switch with its main character gave MCU their worst performance based on legs even though most bookies had it winning the year, now it cant even reach 1b.

Meanwhile movies that set out to entertain without trying to 'educate' their audience on social issues have blown away the competition. What a glorious and satisfying year this has been for the box office. Ill take minions over the past 5 pixar movies any day, and so will the rest of the world it seems.

Wonder if Disney is gonna fudge Lightyear with Thor this upcoming weekend. It will be the only good drop for Buzz

If you mean the drive-in revenue sharing, it’s a pretty standard practice, so yes. However, the success of Minions (with JWD) may limit the Thor coverage, so less of pot to split with LY, smaller “fudge”

Lightyear is getting its first big theater count drop this weekend now the theaters see that it is a flop, those screens will likely be given to TGM.

Moderation

Hi Jessie. Bye Jessie.

Not sure why you still make accounts here. You know that you're banned for a reason, and you know you will get caught again, especially when you post complete garbage like this. Just stop with all this, because it's really silly to post on a forum where you don't belong :)

Looking like an awesome box office haul overall this 4th of July weekend. Nice to see. Almost feels like it's back to where it was... Getting closer and closer. Gonna be nice to have back to weekends with movies opening with 100M+ OW DOM. Still hoping Thor opens bigger than some are suggesting and get to 150M+ OW DOM.

Elvis could do great for all the summer, sadly Hbo Max will kill it.

And, still there are people think that 45 days theatrical window is a too much request. Clearly, 45 days isn’t long for a leggy run.

The last thing I want is to see our box office run like a 70-years old man that shot his semen in one go and died abruptly afterward.

That's basically what Lightyear's audience was. 67% general audience, 16% parents, and 17% kids. When the demos came out, it was pretty white, especially for a kids movie (as white kids are a minority, and many white people no longer identify as such). It was probably mostly white liberal families who went, and they tend to be small, which would explain the 1:1 ratio for LY.

With Minions, yeah.. lots of teens going in groups. But I imagine we'll see families make up a larger portion throughout the week. Or maybe not. Maybe the average family is still shell shocked from the pandemic, or young kids are broken and don't want to go to movies. I know there's been some studies coming out about the cognitive decline in young children during the pandemic, and it's pretty heartbreaking. Most issues like this are impossible to be fixed at a certain point in a child's development, and there's such a backlog in diagnosing and treating childhood issues right now. There aren't resources to deal with millions of kids needing the intensive therapy required. And what's likely going to happen is that the youngest kids will be 'ignored' while resources are focused on the 'hardest' cases. But we need to ration these things so young kids still have a chance.

Can’t wait to see Bros become a surprise 150m hit in September.

It looks hilarious. The writing gives me 90s comedy vibes. But that group bj scene was too much. Definitely not a theater movie for me.
