THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE WEEKEND THREAD

Recommended Posts

Insane for Mario, shouldn´t have a problem to be the highest movie of the year

Those 700M DOM discussion maybe should slow down a bit since it didn´t opened with 220-225M, i think the goal here is surpassing Incredibles 2, i think 3x multiplier from it´s 5-day OW is reasonable but not locked

INT number are less insane than DOM but still amazing, which some big countries left like Japan, i think 800-900M is the goal here

If everything goes right, Mario can finish with 1.5B WW and the biggest animation ever title

INT numbers were good as well. Should do over 100m WW

The MGM deal is benefiting WB in terms of OS. I suspect they won't make a huge amount from Air but I don't think that matters too much.

It's possible but is it reasonable? Incredibles 2 only managed 2.6x its first 5 and that's with summer days. Frozen 2 hit 2.9x but it had Thanksgiving and Christmas to help.

The lack of competition along with amazing WOM can do the trick

But yeah i can easily see the 525 - 550M range tbh, i think surpassing I2 is the best scenario, let´s hope it can do it since i doubt any other movie can reach this

I think Indy 5 have the potential to +500M but that will depend of a lot of factors going in the right direction

Agree 700 is still a pipe (buh dum dum) dream for now. Next weekend may change all that, we’ll see. Would be shocked if it doesn’t beat I2 DOM though. Jurassic World may be a super accurate comp point for the DOM run, like some others have mentioned.

WW, I’m eyeing $1.6 or so atm, but if Japan does explode maybe it can even go over $1.8.

even further back the last time a Universal movie won the year domestic was the Jim Carrey Grinch

Worldwide it was the original Jurassic Park.

Technically Jurassic World edged out TFA in calendar 2015, but the latter of course made another $300M plus in 2016. Also JW would have been the top grosser in every year from 2010-2018 … except the one in which it was released, against the top domestic earner of all time. Some bad luck there

But also JW is Universal’s only Top 3 domestic finish since Grinch in 2000

So, we watched Mario.

The kids LOVED it!  I liked it a lot.  The spouse...ummm...hated it.  We were teasing that we had the critic in the family.  Now, to be fair, he started his critique by saying "it was better than Detective Pikachu" and we said "but you gave that an F". and he said "yup, and this was a D."  He also said he felt like the movie creators had a checklist they were literally ticking off to make this movie.

And yet, I thought everything he hated was great.  I LOVED Bowser.  I LOVED the game elements.  I LOVED the simple story and the desire not to overstay its welcome (a 27 second epilogue in a kids' movie - THANK YOU!).  For grades

Me - B+/B

Spouse - D

Oldest girl - A

2nd girl - A-

Oldest boy - A+

Youngest boy - B+

Note to self - leave the spouse home for the next video game movie and/or the next Illumination movie (I had forgotten after his back-to-back hate for Sonic and Pikachu that I did not take him to Uncharted or Minions 2:)...

Incredible weekend etc., but I don't see it getting to 600. It would need truly exceptional WOM (which I don't really sense) and the 5-day holiday opening likely burned off a lot of demand. If you adjust to $11.75, here's the animated flicks post-2000 that landed between 500-600m (I only adjust the original gross, no re-releases).

  1. Frozen - 579.2
  2. Toy Story 4 - 556.8
  3. Shrek - 555.7
  4. Shrek the Third - 551.2
  5. Despicable Me 2 - 532.0
  6. Monsters, Inc. - 531.2
  7. Secret Life of Pets - 500.4

I'd wager it ends in the 510-530 range, right around DM2 and Pets.

Man that Disney domination from 2015-2019 is absolutely insane.

It's amazing that American Sniper was such a huge hit although I think it's cheating slightly to say it was the highest grossing 2014 film when the majority of the money was made in 2015.

AS should practically be stricken from all BO convo bc the release was just so unconventional it’s hardly a fair comp to any other film that has grossed hundreds of millions this century.
